It's not often that a piece of postal history goes on auction that also is of genealogical interest. There is an ad by the Robert A Siegel auction house of New York City in the August 14, 2000 issue of Linn's Stamp News. The house will be auctioning a collection of postal history items related to New Orleans during the Civil War. The ad has a photograph (unfortunately in black and white) of one envelope that is addressed to: Rev OB Shockley, President; JW Shoppach, (title unclear); and TG Hockersmith (title unclear); Saline Cy Bible Society; Benton, Saline Cy, Ark. I'm not certain of the initials. The stamp on the envelope is a New Orleans 2 cent Postmaster Provisional. The 2000 Scott Catalog lists two values for the stamp if affixed to an envelope: $3,500 if the stamp is blue (issued 1861), and $25,000 if the stamp is red (issued 1862). Sometimes that old correspondence can be worth something! Fred San Antonio, TX
A big thanks to all those who replied so quick to my question and confirmed that I had not imagined this cemetery. This apparently was a family plot of Jahu Warford (1851-1906) and his wife Louisa Jane Daniel (1850-1918). For those interested, here are the details of the cemetery: "section III of Saline County cemeteries states: Cataloged by Virgil Williams, completed Feb.1976.The oldest marked grave is that of James M. Warford Sept 22,1876. Directions: From Benton take Hwy 70 west about 10 miles, after you cross Ten Mile Creek and before you get to Virgil Williams store, cemetery is on the right on a hill. It list three other graves,Joseph H.,James M.and Emma M.,all children of J.H. and L.J. Warford." Again, thanks to all! Fred
Somewhere I read that there is a small Warford Cemetery or a Warford family plot near the Williams store on the old highway to Hot Springs. This cemetery was listed separately from any of the church cemeteries in the neighborhood. Can someone help me and confirm that this cemetery/family plot exists and is not a figment of my imagination? What is its location? Many thanks! Fred San Antonio, TX

Ar Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ar/Saline?read=75 Surname: Ferguson, Childers ------------------------- Stephen Ferguson and Tennessee Childers, Married December 1878, Saline County, AR. Who were parents of Tennessee Childers. Any siblings? Saline County Census 1880 says she was born in AR. Stephen was born in Scotland, naturalized "1874?", where? Will happily reimburse cost of confirming this info - Don't know whether naturalized in Arkansas. Said to have "stowed away" on ship before age 18. Family story is that his mother was in America already. He had been taken from her by his paternal grandparents when she remarried after his father died. He came to America to find her. Her married name in America may have been Hamilton. Stephen re-married, again in Saline County to Mary Studor. He lived out his life in Saline County. Thank you for any light that may be shed on either side of this story. Tennessee died in a fire at home about March 1884, ?Saline County, AR. Any record of this? Any information appreciated.

Dear readers, Yet another mystery BRAZIL has surfaced from the Reconstruction Period in Bastrop County, Texas. Along with the MOSES BRAZIL family of Saline County who moved to Texas the year before, the 1870 Bastrop schedules contain:\ Household 2007-2133, Page 290 August 5, 1870 BRAZLL, SQUIRE 35WM Farm Laborer ARK KATHA 20WF Keeps House ARK M.A. 9WM TN A.J. 6WF TN R.H. 1WM TX SQUIRE's family lived 33 households away from WILLIAM and NANCY BRAZIL COX, 96 away from MOSES and MATILDA ALLEN BRAZIL. >From this and related evidence, I draw the following conclusions. See if you agree: 1) SQUIRE was a hitherto unidentified descendant of RICHARD BRAZIL, JR (c.1790-1860's) and MARY ANN ALLEN BRAZIL, named for his Grandfather SQUIRE ALLEN (1765-1842). He is not to be confused with SQUIRE ALLEN BRAZIL (1841-1860's), son of MOSES and MATILDA ALLEN BRAZIL, who died of measles while in Confederate service. 2) From the birthplaces of his children and the age difference with his wife, it seems reasonable to infer that SQUIRE and his first wife were in Tennessee during the Civil War, that she died and he returned to Arkansas after the war (in whichever order), and that he then married KATHA and came out to Texas in 1869 with MOSES BRAZIL and certain members of the ANDREW JACKSON BRAZIL family. Speaking of "Jackson" BRAZIL's orphans, I checked Bastrop County marriages yesterday and found no marriage for JESSE "Big Jess" BRAZIL {surviving twin son of Jackson's born c.1858 in Saline County). I reported previously his presence in 1880 in the Bastrop County household of WILLIAM J. NIXON, 54, and his wife and six daughters ranging in age from 6 to 23. So "Big Jess" (evidently) didn't "marry the farmer's daughter" even though he had plenty to choose from! Surely somebody somewhere is looking for these long lost BRAZILs.... Carey

I forgot to mention that Leven Hackett's wife was Mary Wilson. She died in Saline County, but I have no death date or burial site. That information would also be helpful. Leven is buried at Rosemont. Thanks again, Suzanne Russell [email protected]
The following is the obit of my great grandfather, Leven W. Hackett, who migrated with his family from Randolph County, NC to Saline County about 1877. He had no sons to carry on the Hackett surname, but his daughters were: Eldora, born in NC in 1868 (my grandmother, married Ezekiel Curry Russell) Emma, born in NC 1870 Cora, born in NC in 1874 Leanora, born in Indiana, on the way to AR, in 1877 Callie, born in Saline County in 1882. I would like to find more information about Leven as a postmaster and about his Union service in the Civil War. Any information about his daughters would be a plus as well. I think the Mrs. J. F. Thompson mentioned below was Emma Hackett, but am not sure. I don't even know the family's religion, although my father, son of Ezekiel, was a Methodist. >From the Benton Courier, March 19, 1914, page 7: DEATH OF L. W. HACKETT L. W. Hackett, formerly of Benton, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. A. Westbrook, near Stonewall, Okla, on Thursday of last week. The body was brought to Benton Sunday and funeral services were held at Rosemont cemetery, conducted by the Rev. W. R. McEwen. Two of Mr. Hackett's daughters, Mrs. J. F. Thompson and Miss Cal Hackett, reside in Benton. Mr. Hackett was a Union veteran and many years ago was Benton's postmaster. Thanks for any help, Suzanne Russell [email protected]
