Cloud" tombstone that we found in Melrose Township, Illinois. This tombstone sits on the top of a hill with tombstones from the "Gard" family. It reads: "GW Cloud Co F 79th Ill Inf" The Gard family tombstones are for Rebecca A. Gregory wife of T.M. Gard died Jan 9, 1892 Aged 54 y 2 m 8 days and George T. son of T.M. and R.A. Gard died Oct 22, 1877 12y 6m 10 days. Rebecca A. Gregory was married to Thomas M. Gard, son of William N. Gard, son of Ephriam Gard, son of John Gard, son of Jeremiah Gard. We do not know the connection of GW Cloud or why his tombstone is there with "Gards". This is a very old cemetary in disrepair and the GW Cloud headstone is propped against a tree. My Great Grandfather's name is G.W.(George Washington) Roland and his mother's name was Emeline. He had a brother named William (Bill) and a sister Leanna (Ann) as well as J.D. (Jefferson Davis) Roland and maybe a James and John as well. Strangely enough though, Jeremiah Rowland died at Port Hudson, Louisiana in 1863 and My Great Grandfather G.W. was born in 1870. Apparently, from what I can tell that is where the name changed from Rowland to Roland. All the records I have found on Jeremiah are Rowland, but all my ancestors after that are Roland. I need as much information as I can get on Jeremiah in order to verufy he is my Great Great Grandfather. Any help would be appreciated.
