He was taken to Camp Douglas where he died on May 8, 1862. He probably was sick or came down sick in the weather from 13 March unitl 8 April when they were captured. Major spring thunderstorms and then a cold snap and freak snow storm, while the Union army kept them camped out in the open. This was probably caused when they evacutated Fort Thompson at New Madrid, MO on the west side, their fellow soldiers did not load their baggage so they would have blankets and clothes. The 11th had been sent out to hold back the Union Army while they evactuated equipment etc to the east bank. Their sister unit, 12th Ark was tasked to load the boats with all their gear as well as that of the 11th, while the 11th went out to fight the enemy and buy time. THis was in a terrible storm. When th! ey were called in it was to immediately load on the boats. Once aboard they realized the 12th had not loaded their equipment so they crossed the river with just what they had on their backs. Therefore a large number of men became sick and a big portion died early in prison camp in May from the exposure to such harsh climate. The original muster rolls were discovered in the recent past and William Milliner was born in Ala, was 32 when enlisted. He was 5'11" with blue eyes, sandy hair and a dark complection. Listed as a farmer. Hope this adds some to your knowledge of your family. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. THis is the area just north of Salem and slighly to the east of Avilla. Older brother Franklin also served during the war in Co C 3rd Ark Cav and Co D Hawthorne/Cocke's 39th Ark Infantry. Looks like they move around a bit. The father Henry, was active in the pre war militia and probably continued to serve in the 18th Militia and local Home Guards which existed in Saline county throughout the war. McCray, one of the pioneer settlers of Saline County, was born here in 1844, being the son of H. N. and Elizabeth (Carroll) McCray, the father a native of South Carolina, and the mother of Alabama. H.N. McCray was married when a young man, and removed to what is now Union Township, Saline County, Ark., in 1837, there4 entering land and partly improving it, when he sold out and went to what is now Grant County. He bought a claim and improved it, but some years after returned to Saline County, and settled in Union Township, the second time in 1842. Later he bought a farm on Saline River. His remaining days were spent in Benton, his death occurring March 27, 1886. He was a member of Benton Lodge No. 34, A. F. & A. M. His wife died in 1865. Henry H. McCray passed his boy-hood days on the farm, and was educated in the subscription schools of Saline County. He enlisted at Little Ro0ck, in 1862, in Col. Crawford's regiment for three years or during the war, and was engaged in scouting, being transferred to Col. Hawthorn's regiment of infantry, where he was principally engaged in Texas. He was paroled at Marshall, Tex., in May 1865, when he returned to Saline County, becoming engaged in farming. He married in November, 1868, Miss A. J. Frances Pelton, a native of Saline County, and daughter of James and Arrilla (Williams) Pelton, of Illinois. Mr. Pelton came to the Louisiana Territory when a young man, was married here and settled in what is now Beaver Township, Saline County, Ark. He settled on a claim of eighty acres given by the territory to actual settlers, where he made his home until his death in 1846. His esteemed wife survived until 1876. Grandfather Berry Williams was a native of North Carolina, was in the War of 1812, and at a very early day came to Arkansas. His death occurred in what is now Grant County, in 1854. Mr. McCray settled in 1872 upon a farm, where he now resides, which is one of the oldest settled places in Saline County. He has also opened up considerable land, and has now about 100 acres under cultivation, owning besides 475 acres of well-improved land in Saline Township. Mr. McCray and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and take an active part in all church work. They have been blessed with six children: Flora, Clara, Jasper, James, Rosa and Marvin. Mr. McCray has always taken an active part in everything which would tend to the improvement of the town and county, both in a material, religious and moral sense. Your best bet is to just go to the nearest Family Library ran by the Latter Day Saints. If you need something they do not have, it is my understanding that they will get it for you. I must say that I have never used the small local ones at all, but I have actually been to Salt Lake City which was a wonderful experience. Some things can be found on line in Arkansas, but it has been my experience that what I was looking for, was not there. If I were you, I would check with your local library and I bet they can point you in the right direction. If your friend wants to search in Arkansas, I can suggest a excellent research person who will check records here in Arkansas. She usually gets a donation to the local museum building fund which is currently being used to pay off the new roof. As much as things cost in this day and time, she would be your best bet as it would be cheaper and probably quicker. She is working on a mystery for my cousin right now. Good luck in your search. He is the eldest son of Luther Wesley Pitts (83 now). He knows nothing about his grandfather except maybe his name might have been Wesley Luther Pitts. The only thing he knows about his grandmother is that she was married many times, put his father out at 12, and died in Saline Co. in the early 1930's & thinks she was married to a Blankenship at he time of death. I don't think he ever met his grandfather & his grandmother did not have much to do with him or his brothers. I live in Missouri, so would my library have Arkansas death records. MO has a great site that I can get a look at their death records, but I haven't been able to find any good sites for Arkansas. Also, you need to check the Arkansas Death Index. It covers 1914-1948 and is available at your local library in the genealogy room. It is also possible that the Social Security records may be able to help if anyone lived long enough to work under social security. Another thing to consider is that everything was so hard in the 1930's, that a lot of folks just headed west. My daddy's own cousins headed for Califoria to keep from starving to death in Arkansas. It was that bad. Good luck. Linda Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
