    1. [ARSALINE] Tennessee Adeline "Tennie" Leech Hill of Benton, Saline Co., Arkansas
    2. Searching for an obituary and the name of the cemetery where Tennessee Adeline "Tennie" (Leech) Hill is buried. It is believed she died in Riverton, Caldwell Parish, Louisiana in 1910 or 1912, while living with her son, George Washington Hill. It is possible she might have died in another surrounding state for George was a saw mill worker and traveled. Tennie married Ezekiel M. Hill on June 23, 1858 in Jefferson Co., Arkansas. He died on March 25, 1865 as a Prisoner of War in Civil War in Little Rock or Pine Bluff, Ark. Where was he buried? Any help will be greatly appreciated. 1. Re: [ARSALINE] John Y. Lindsey Death Date
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: tinkerok Surnames: Lindsey, Davis Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.arkansas.counties.saline/1537.2.1.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Could someone please clarify for me the exact, correct death date for John Young Lindsey, b 1800 Christian Co. Ky., son of William Caleb and Sarah (Young) Lindsey. Prior messages from two sources on this message board indicate both 20 Jan 1865 and 20 Jan 1866 as death date. Both cannot be true. My records had indicated 1865 but had no specific day or month. I believe it is correct that he is buried in Kentucky (Baptist) Church Cem 7 mi. west of Benton, Saline Co. Ark., a church which he founded. Saline Co. Marr Book A, p 33 indicates he was md 24 Jan 1841 to Jane ("Jennie") Davis, by Wm. Whorton, MG. My info also shows Jane "Jennie" Davis Lindsey d 24 Dec 1886, not 1866. Can someone please clarify, based on documented info (e.g., their tombstone records)? I believe confusion has resulted because Elizabeth Lindsey b 1798 Ky, dau of Wm. Caleb Lindsey and Sarah Young, md 1) Martin Fletcher, who d 1819 in Lawrence Co. Ark. Eliz. Lindsey Fletcher then remarried, to Abij! ah T. Davis (on 1 July 1821 in Lawrence Co. Ark.). They had children Caleb Lindsey Davis b 1824 AR and a dau Jane, b 1826 Ark, d Mar 1864 Panola Co. TX, having married John C. (Caleb?) Lindsey, b 1822 Ala. (The Saline Co. Ark. Deed Bk D, p 177 shows deed of gift from Abijah Davis to dau. Jane Lindsey, wife of John C. Lindsey; deed dated 8 Jan 1853; reiteration of this gift and names in Deed Bk E, pg 16, 10 July 1855. [Does anyone know what relationship Abijah Davis bears to Rezin Davis and/or Nathan Davis of Saline Co.?] Dr. John C. Lindsey and wife Jane Davis Lindsey are on the 1850 census of Saline Co. Ark and the 1860 census of Panola Co. TX, where he practiced medicine and they both died; Abijah Davis was admr. of both their estates in Panola Co. TX. The couple appear to have gone back and forth from Ark. to Tex, several times. Can anyone i.d. parents of this Dr. John C. Lindsey? His children were: Abijah Davis Lindsey b 1842 Ark.; Joseph Lamar Lindsey b 1847 TX, ! Elizabeth Lindsey b 1849 TX, Hannah Lindsey b 1851 TX, Caleb Lindsey b 1854 AR (per 1860 Panola Co. TX census), and Mary Angeline Lindsey b 1859 TX. It would seem there must be close ties between John Young Lindsey and this Dr. John C. Lindsey, for John Young Lindsey's sister, Sarah Lindsey Williams (who had md and div. Dr. Joseph Huber in 1825), who ended up a widowed [she md 2) in 1831 to William W. "Blind Billy" Williams] invalid in household of her brother John Young Lindsey (1860 Saline Co Ark census), had, in Jan 1856, appointed Abijah Davis as Power of Atty for herself, which she revoked in May 1856 (ref Saline Co. Ark. Deed Bk E, p 88 and Book E, pg 152, respectively). Again, can anyone clarify? Gloria J. Author: CarolynFranklin70 Surnames: Emeline Cobb Roland, Rowland Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.arkansas.counties.saline/337.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am so glad to find this post from you, RT. I have several questions, but will only ask one in this post. It is concerning the name of Emeline Cobb Rowland, Roland. You share the name Sarah Emeline Cobb, Roland. I have never seen any documents with her name as Sarah Emeline, do you have anything that is documented giving her that name? If not, is it a name that has been passed down through the family? >From all of my records she is, also, my Great Great Grandmother. John Henry Rowland/Roland was born July 1863. It was three months after Jeremiah Roland was killed on March 8, 1963, that the probate application was made naming her children. John H. was not named as he had no name because he was not yet born. She lists him as her son which can not be denied. Jeremiah was there in Benton with Emeline until Jan. 1, 1963, therefore, it is most likely that he is the father of her unborn son, John H. Roland. I am sure only a DNA test will prove or disprove this lineage. There is a male line of cousins back to Emeline, so I am planning someday to have the DNA test given. On the application to administer the Probate records for Jermiah Roland, Joel Whitten, has listed their names. He has consistently misspelled their names. They were; Leannah Susan Roland, William Buckhannan Rolland, James Layfayett and Jeff Davis Rolland, Children of said deceased all Residing in Saline County, Arkansas. >From census records and obituary of Jeff Davis Rolland, I believe that they were twins, both born in 1862. Thanks for sharing here. I hope to get to communicate with you further concerning our Rowland/Roland families. One other fact was that Emeline Cobb Rowland/Roland could not read or write as indicated by her mark "X" on official documents. It is interesting to me that she was approved to be the Administrator of Jeremiah's Probate after Joel Whitten just (In her words) "up and went to Texas". He left her without finishing the Probate of Jeremiah's probate. She was finally able to sell the farm on the Courthouse steps because she couldn't pay the taxes as she didn't have help to farm it. The Final Account , Current and voucher is dated Oct 1870, and Filed October 25th, 1870. Those are all facts stated in the Probate records for Jeremiah Roland/Rowland. So, that is why she had not gone to Faulkner Co., to be with her family before 1870. That is a very interesting story about Jeremiah at Port Hudson. We visited Port Hudson National Park and Museum. The Park Ranger told me that there were no records, medical or otherwise for Jeremiah Roland. That there would, also, be no known grave site as the Mississippi River is a meandering river and is always changing. I am interested in the book that you are reading about "Port Hudson Confederate Bastion on the Mississippi". I will look for it. Thanks for the dialog. I hope it will continue. Author: rtknight Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.arkansas.counties.saline/337.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Great to see this posts take off so much lately. Lots of good information posted. Just a few observations. The 11/17th Arkansas Infantry was partially mounted while at Port Hudson. The part that was mounted was outside the fort when it was surrounded and captured. The non-mounted men were part of the surrender. I'm sure there were many orphaned children in that area of Arkansas at the time as fathers never came home and mothers died of desease, starvation, etc. It could very well be that the children listed with Emmaline Cobb Rowland could be family members who had lost theie parents and she took in to raise as her own. A couple of months ago I wrote a short history of Jeremiah Rowland for some family members. I copied it and will post it here incase someone wants to read it. It is from the best information i have in my files, but may not be exactly correct. Granny's great grandfather was named Jeremiah Rowland. He was born in 1835 in Alabama, according to census records. On January 3, 1856 he married Sarah Emmaline Cobb in Dekalb Township, Saline (now Grant) County, Arkansas. On May 25, 1857 Emmaline gave birth to a little girl, LeeAnn S Rowland. in 1859 they had a baby boy, William, and in 1862 another boy, James. When the Civil War broke out in 1861 Jeremiah was able to stay home on his farm for the first two years, but then things changed... According to the book I am reading this week, "Port Hudson, Confederate Bastion on the Mississippi" in December of 1862 Major General Franklin "Gardner ordered five officers from each depleted regiment to return to their local communities in search of deserters and new recruits." The local community of the 11th Arkansas Infantry regiment, Company A, was the town of Benton, Saline County, Arkansas. On January 1, 1863 Jeremiah Rowland was enlisted in that company and shortly after set out for Port Hudson with the other new recruits to join their regiment. Life at Port Hudson was pretty rough. Pour rations and bad sanitary conditions led one private to write home " I have been living almost like a dog for the last six weeks... in truth I have been almost starved." Tennessee Lieutinant R. B. Crockett wrote his cousin " We are living in a swamp and drinking water out of a Mud hole." The region experienced the coldest weather it had seen in twenty-five years. In the midst of all this Jeremiah became ill and reported to the base hospital. On March 8, 1863, barely over two months in the Confederate Army, 28 year old Jeremiah Rowland passed away, leaving a wife and three young children at home. The book describes a funeral that took place about this same time at the post. " a rough pine coffin drawn in a mule team, and followed by eight men and a corporal, with reverse arms, and perhaps some half dozen men who knew and loved the man whose remains are to be commited to the earth... Quietly and silently the firing party fall into line by the side of the grave - the coffin is laid before them - arms are presented as a token of respect, the necessary command to load at will, is given; three vollies are fired and the comrades of the deceased shoulder arms and with rapid steps march back to their encampment." Jeremiah Rowland was buried in an unmarked grave somwhere on the grounds of Port Hudson. To my knowledge Sarah Emmaline Cobb Rowland never remarried, although I believe she had a couple of more children living with her on later census record. LeeAnn Rowland married Frank Weaver and was the mother of Laura Emmaline Weaver, who married Barlow Martin and was the mother of our own Dessie Martin Knight.
