Is there a land document expert? I am running across BLM land certificates that have the word "Graduation A.F." written by the certificate number. I have also seen what looks like "Graduation L&C" in the same place. Does anyone know what that means? Thanks, Fred Groth San Antonio, TX

Hi all! Does anyone know the origin of the name Mahala or Mahalia? It seemed to be a very popular name in the 1800's. Several of my ancestors had that first name. Thanks much. Charlene Holland
I am posting a short history of the old Salem Church below and would love to hear from anyone who can tell me more about it or give me the exact location on Sulphur Springs Road. Thanks. Carole Mayfield Salem Church in Saline County History of Arkansas Baptists, page 117. This church is on Alum Fork of Saline River in what was then Clark County, now Saline. It was organized about the same time that Kentucky Church was, 1822. It had six members in 1825. Who organized it we do not know. It was in the organization of Little Rock Association in 1824 and still in that association in 1828. Minutes of the Little Rock Association in 1825 record Charles Brandon, George Stroope and Silas Dodd in attendance from Salem Church. History of Arkansas Baptists, page 446. Salem Church represented by C. Dyer, W. Chinault, and J. James at the organization of the Baptist State Convention on September 21, 1848. Pioneer Faith, page 30. The 1825 meeting of the Little Rock Association was held with Salem Church in Clark County on November 5-7. This church was located on the Alum Fork of the Saline River, about six miles NW of Owensville, on the Sulphur Springs Road, in what is now western Saline County. Pioneer Faith, page 37. The Saline Association was organized at Spring Creek Church at Benton on April 2, 1836. The moderator for the service was Eld. Allen Samuels from the Salem Church on Alum Fork. In May of 1836 they met again and minutes recorded Eld. Allen Samuels, Robert Daniel and John Terry representing Salem Church on Alum Fork. Pioneer Faith, page 39. In 1843 Salem, Saline County, was represented by O. J. Evans, Jesse Spencer, James Hancock, at the Saline Baptist Association meeting. They recorded 28 members, having baptised 10 and 9 received by letter. Pioneer Faith, page 42. In 1848 at the Saline Association meeting, Aaron Bolt was listed as minister in charge of Salem (Owensville), Union (Blands) and Spring Creek. Pioneer Faith, page 42 & 43. The 1853 meeting of the Saline Association reported Salem Church had 38 members, Owensville Post Office; Aaron Bolt, pastor; Messengers W. Chenault, John Terry and George James.
Hi! Time to repost this, I think. I am looking for information about LUVICIA JAMES, daughter of CLAYBOURNE JAMES (son of JESSE JAMES). She is listed in the 1850 Saline County Census as VICY JAMES with her parents, CLAYBOURNE and JANE (JENNY) JAMES, along with her siblings. She married JAMES W. JONES of Scott County (then Sebastian County). Ive been told that she may have been married prior to JAMES W. JONES, but have not been able to prove this one way or the other. She is listed in the 1860 Scott County Census with her husband and children. Her husband, James, was killed by bushwhackers during the Civil War. After the war she married WILLIAM R. VAUGHN and had six more children. My great grandmother, MELVINA JONES was her youngest daughter by JAMES W. JONES. Melvina married WILLIAM PRESTION MORROW in Scott County in the early 1800s. Below is the descendant chart for LuVicia James. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. Charlene Holland P.O. I just wish to advise all that I have received an e-mail from the family of Dr Dale Huchingson stating that he passed away from cancer on 14 May 1998. Dale had completed his manuscript on the Warford family of Saline County, AR in February this year. This manuscript also included his research on his, Huchingson, family, as well as other lines that had married into the Warfords, such as Rigsby, Edds, Eldridge, Evans, Garner, and James. I do not know what will be done with Dale's research notes, nor if there are, or will be, more copies of his manuscript. If I hear anything more, I'll post it. Fred Groth San Antonio, TX
I have just received the following announcement from RootsWeb: The new search engine server is now online and can operate at the speed of a full T1 connection. Courtesy of hacks by Dale Schneider, you can search the USGenWeb Archives, now with *headlines* and *updated* to within the last 24 hours, at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ussearch.htm Courtesy of hacks by Karen Isaacson, you can search the archives of any mailing list (except those withdrawn by the listowner), now with nicer *formats* and *updated* to within the last 24 hours, at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl I'd also like to explicitly thank the folks who provided the resources that have made this new facility possible: o RootsWeb's Patrons, Donors, Sponsors, and Members. o Palladium Interactive, developers of the Ultimate Family Tree software for genealogists. Folks interested in helping RootsWeb provide new facilities can become Members by using the Web form at: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html By the way, the next server we'll be bringing online will be a box dedicated to supporting Marc Nozell's HTMLized versions of the mailing list archives. We should have that box online within 48 hours, though it's reasonable to expect Marc to need a little time after that to get his software installed. (: Projects after that include a dedicated IRC server, upgrading the mail hub, upgrading the main Web server, building a NT-based FrontPage server, bringing a "dirtylists" list server online, and bringing a third ordinary list server online. [ The "dirtylists" server is for the big, rarely used announcement lists. We've developed a number of those things with 5,000 to 300,000 subscribers, and every time a post drops we kick the daylights out of the list server with hundreds or even thousands of bounces. We need a specially tuned box to handle these turkeys. ] No rest for the wicked, I suppose ... By George, It's Simply Revolutionary! Now you can research for Federal Land Records on the Internet! http://www-glorecords.blm.gov Access to Federal land patents issued by the General Land Office (GLO) prior to 1908 for the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin is now available on the Internet. You can search the GLO database for each state, select a record, and view the corresponding land patent. Of course, the search speed and clarity of the image will depend on your modem and software. To achieve the best results from your query on our Website, complete as many search fields as possible. The screen displaying the results of your search can show only 50 records, so the more information you can supply, the better your chances of finding the family land. Once a record is located, you can view the image. And, by completing a return e-mail, you can request a certified copy of the land patent be sent to you. The fee for a certified copy of a Federal Land Patent is $1.50. The Internet is just one of the resources available for researching Federal Land Records. The databases for the most of these land records are also available on CD ROMS that you may purchase from the Government Printing Office for about $15 each. Of course, the BLM's GLO Access Team will be happy to answer your questions about the more than 5 million Federal land patent documents that are maintained at the Eastern States Office in Springfield, Virginia. For more information, please call the GLO Access Team at 703-440-1600. Does anyone know what the County Board of Supervisors did in Saline County during 1873-1874? The members were J.D. Henster, J.W. Adams, D.J. McDonald, and William S. Lee. Do any records exist of their work, and if so where are the records? Marilyn Kosanke
