Hi, I'm looking for any information on the HOLLINGER line that lived in Saline County in the late 1800's. I believe they lived in the part of Saline that later became Grant County. I don't have a specific name...I only know that some of the Hollinger's moved to Saline Co. from Georgia and/or Alabama. Their is also a DOUGAN line that I am interested in. The DOUGAN line married into the HOLLINGER line a couple of times. Any help is appreciated. I will share any info I have. Thank you. Hi Saline County, I have not posted all year and figure that there is no better time than the present. Any information about the following ancestors, that lived in Saline County, is welcome. Let me know if we share any ancestor, if any surname is in your family history (maybe we can connect the dots), or whatever. HUMPHRIES or HUMPHREYS, MCCOOL Emily HUMPHRIES died 1916 and is buried in New Frienship cemetery. She was born in MS in August 1856 to Joshua Badger HUMPHRIES and {unknown}. Joshua married Mary Jane (MCCOOL) MOORE after 1856. Emily married Andrew Mathis MCCOOL in 1880. I would like to know: * Joshua's first wife * Joshua's parent's names (his mother was "America" on the 1850 Coahoma County, MS census) * Joshua's dates and places of birth of death * Emily's exact date and place of birth and marriage * Andrew's exact date and place of birth and death HAYES, SHOCKLEY Charles HAYES (or Charley or Charlie) married Mary Ellen SHOCKLEY around 1887. They appear on the 1900 Saline County census. Their children included Princess (b. 1887), Horace (b. 1894), Lester (b. 1898), Ruby (b. 1900). Family history says that Charles was admitted to the mental hospital in Little Rock and Mary Ellen married Henry MCCOOL. * When did Charles get admitted to the hospital? Any other details? * Who were Charles' parents? Exact date and place of birth, marriage, and death * When did Mary Ellen and Henry marry? Where? * When did the HAYES family move to Milwaukee? COLE, RITZ, BUFFINGTON Zettie COLE married John RITZ on 30 Jan 1892. They had a daughter, Lula May RITZ, in August 1900. Lula married John Harland BUFFINGTON. I know nothing else about Zettie and welcome any information or leads. Thank you, Charles McCool [email protected]
Hi. I'm new to this list, and thanks to Gloria Nethercutt's transcription of the Fowler Cemetery, I have located my great grandmother's final resting place, and I was rewarded also with other immediate family members being there also. Although it is far too late to meet them, I feel there must be other members of my TAYLOR and/or PHILLIPS family still around the Saline Co. area. My great grandmother was Mattie M. TAYLOR PHILLIPS KELLEY/KELLY. I am looking for cousins who would be from the Dora B. PHILLIPS TAYLOR (Mattie's daughter) and William C. TAYLOR (Dora's husband) line. My great grandmother died, according to the headstone, in 1951, but I have no information as to the month or day. Who would I contact regarding a look-up of the Saline County death index and then a copy of her death notice or obituary? I still don't have a clue as to who her parents were, but according to my grandfather's birth certificate, as filled out by "Grandma Kelley," Mattie was born in Alabama. The cemetery information gives the year as 1860. I would truly love to speak with any cousins out there that are currently researching this line, and would like to make a connection with that part of my family I've never known. Charlie Ward

I am posting this to warn others about problems with ; Census Microfilm Expeditors 476 E. South Temple , Suite 4 Salt Lake City , UT 84111 website ; www.censusmicrofilm.com e-mail ; [email protected] I was lured to order several microfilm copies from this company with "guarantees" of "speedy delivery" and "low price" . My order was placed in October of 1998 and as of this posting I have not received the order or a refund after numerous contacts with Steven Jensen at this firm . In his occasional replies he repeatedly gave false information to me as to the status of the order and cashed the check when mentioned stopping payment on it .I have copies of all documents and correspondences for those interested . Complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau and the United States Postal Inspectors , they have informed me that even they can't order this company to give a refund , but may seek criminal charges . I guess small claims court is next . If you are seeking genealogy resources......consider my experiences with this "Firm". Thank you , Kenneth Sartin
Dear Charlene, No doubt you have heard by now of the old mining town named Silver City in southwestern New Mexico. More likely your ancestor died on the trail to Virginia City, Nevada, where the fabulous Comstock Lode was discovered in June 1859. Many attribute tax revenue from Comstock's river of silver backing up Lincoln's greenbacks with winning the war for the Union. Speaking of The war, we may be connected through my Granduncle SQUIRE ALLEN BRAZIL (1841-c.1863) who died of measles while in Confederate service. His widow was the former MARY JANE HOLLAND whom he married in Saline County 27 March 1859. Several of the remaining Brazils in Central Arkansas descend from this couple. Carey
Other resources that are very helpful in figuring out townships: Desmond Walls Allen, _Arkansas Township Digest: Minor Civil Divisions, 1820-1990_ (Conway, AR: Arkansas Research, 1994). See her website to purchase: http://biz.ipa.net/arkresearch/index.html Russell Pierce Baker, _Arkansas Township Atlas: A History of the Minor Civil Divisions & Each Arkansas County_ (Hot Springs: Arkansas Genealogical Society, 1984). Of course, neither book can produce historical maps of 1800s townships that apparently were never mapped on paper, but both books give all the available information on the townships and changes to those townships over the years. Both have township maps of the counties showing 1900s township divisions.

Bakers's _From Memdag to Norsk: A Historical Directory of Arkansas Post Offices, 1832-1971_ (Hot Springs: Arkansas Genealogical Society, 1988). On page 203, it lists three Silver Cities. But the one that looks most likely, based on a route from Saline to Scott Counties, is Silver City/Silver in Montgomery County. The legal description of its location is Section 20, Township 2 South, Range 23 West. It was discontinued in 1953 and the mail then went to Mt. Ida. The book further explains that it was originally named "Love" and became a post office in 1873, but the name was changed to Silver City in 1879. These dates are a little later than what you're looking for--on the other hand, many post office names came from names already used in the community, so perhaps there was a small community called Silver City there before it became an official post office. There is also the possibility that, although it was not called Silver City at the time your GGG Grandfather died there, relatives later referred to the location by the name it had when they were talking about it. Silver City, Arkansas, is also listed in _Post Offices in the United States, 1884_ by Dopn SImmons (Melber, KY: Simmons Historical Publications, 1987), p. 9. The only information, however, is that it was in Montgomery County. There is no other Silver City listed for Arkansas although there is a Silver Hill in Sevier County. Carolyn
Hi Does anyone know of a place called Silver City. It would have been a place between Saline County to Scott County, AR. Supposedly my gr gr gr grandfather died on the trail, when the family was moving from Saline County to Scott County back in the 1850's. He was buried at a place called Silver City. There was a town by the name of Silver in the early 1900's east of Mt. Ida, but was not on an 1898 map I have. Anyone with any ideas? Thanks very much Charlene

Charlene, Our James family and the other families enumerated on the 1840 Saline census for Owen twp. pg 214 are families who were living in present day Holland twp., on the north fork of the Saline River near present day Paron, AR. You can order a township plat map from the Saline Co. Chamber of Commerce and then be able, from the resources Carolyn outlined above, find exactly where they lived. I think you can find the Chamber's address on one of Leon's links on the Saline Co. website. Carole

Possibly they both would have been about the same >area. The boundaries of Owen Township were first defined by the county court 29 April 1836--see Saline County Court Record Book A, p. 5 (six townships were designated at that time). I believe there are other later entries sprinkled though the county court records which show the changing townships, but these entries aren't indexed. I don't remember any map of Saline County or the area that shows the boundaries in 1840 or 1850. There is an 1850 map showing Saline County in my book _1850 Saline County, Arkansas Census_, but it doesn't shed light on the boundaries of the townships; in this book there's also a map showing the townships but it's for 1936. Unfortunately, the 1850 enumerator didn't record the census by township--instead he just marked them all "District of Saline," by which he meant Saline County. Of course, Saline County looked a lot different at the time you're interested in--before Grant County was formed out of it's southern part. Although Owen Township's boundaries changed over time, it remained centered in the same place, around township 1 South, Range 14 West, but growing smaller over time as more townships were formed and as the boundary with Pulaski County changed over time (Owen Township borders Pulaski County on it's north and east sides). The 1840 Saline County census enumerated families by township; by comparing the 1840 census entry for various families with their original land entries (found in other sources), it's possible to make an educated guess about some of the boundaries since the legal descriptions follow the same township and range descriptions found on a modern map. I hope this helps some. Which family(s) are you researching in this area? Carolyn
Hi Does anyone know about where these places would be on a map might be? I'm trying to place where Owen Township would have been in 1840 and where this census may have been taken: 1850 Saline County Census, District of Saline. Possibly they both would have been about the same area. Thanks much Charlene
I have post some Township 1860 and 1920 Saline County Census in the last few days. I also have posted the Hick Cemetery. Leon Rowland Moore 3924 Able LN Alexander. AR 72002-9404
