February 4, 2000 For Immediate Release Contact: Tracey Converse [email protected] 501-835-7502 ARKANSAS' LARGEST FAMILY HISTORY ORGANIZATION OFFERS GENEALOGY CLASSES Little Rock-The Arkansas Family History Association recently announced a lecture series featuring national and regional speakers on how to trace your family tree. According to April 1999 issue of Time Magazine, family history research is one of the leading subject on the Internet. With the advent of the Internet, AFHA founder Desmond Walls Allen says, "Reconnecting distant family relations is now easier than before. Many folks find when they get on mailing lists that they have a distant cousin also researching the family." "Our website alone had 20,000 hits last month. Our staff of nationwide volunteers have done over 200 genealogy lookups in the last month." Designed to offer free membership and online lookups to people with Internet access, AFHA has grown to the largest genealogical organization in the state with over 1000 members worldwide. During just the first three weeks of this year, the AFHA Internet Mailing list saw over 700 messages posted about Arkansas history. "The phenomenal growth shows an incredible interest of the people of Arkansas to learn about their families past," said Allen. Education is a major goal of this organization. With monthly meetings held at the Central Arkansas Library's Main Branch, AFHA hopes to educate more people in the fine art of research. Tickets to the classes are $12 in advance and $10 for members. The class runs from 2-5 pm at the Main Library in Little Rock at 100 Rock Street. Monies raised will be used to support the Richard C. Butler Center for Arkansas Studies at the Central Arkansas Library. The February 20 meeting will feature regional lecturer Tracey Converse. Her topic will be "Surfing the Web for Cousins." She will provide insight into how to find your family information on the web. What search engines to use and how to share your information with others. Converse is also the web master for the Central Arkansas Library System and has been on the web for 5 years and researching her family history since 1983. Additional classes are slated for March 17, April 15, May 14, June 11 and July 30. Topics will include Newspaper Research, Beginning Genealogy, Civil War Records, and Native American Research. It was unintentional. My faux pas was the more regretable since the last attachment contained untrue information: the Rusk County (TX) Historical Commission's county history is in error in attributing a son named SAMUEL PATTERSON GAGE to REUBEN GAGE, who died in Saline County on Halloween, 1844. SAMUEL was likely his nephew, but that is also unproved.

    1. Question
    2. Hello, During the holiday "free time" on Ancestry.com, I printed some Arkansas census lists and have a question. I have been looking for information on my gggrandmother, Eliza Hartman, whose 1st husband's 1st name I have never known, (Hartman was her 1st married name, and the maiden name of my ggrandmother, Amanda Jane Hartman, born 1865, who married William L. Rye. Her mother, Eliza Hartman, then married LeRoy Callahan on Jan. 6, 1878.) The census I printed out from Ancestry.com, which is from the AR 1870 Federal Census Index, shows: 1870 - HARTMAN, Eliza, Scott County, AR, pg. 556, Benton Saline Twp. 1870 - HARTMAN, Nate, Scott County, AR, pg. 556, Benton Saline Twp. I know this family lived in or around Benton, Saline Co. I don't understand this, unless it is an error. Shouldn't it be "Benton, Saline County"? Does anyone know if there was a "Benton SAline Twp. in Scott County in 1870? I need to know before I pursue this much farther. Any help or ideas appreciated! Thank you, Lyn

    3. I may have a "galvanized Yankee" in the family. I need suggestions to prove or disprove that CSA soldier O.C. Dortch (Dorch) and USA soldier Olsey C. Dortch were one in the same person (or not). O.C. Dortch served in the 12th Arkansas Infantry and in Cocke's Regmt. He apparently enlisted at Rockport in June 1862 and after serving in the 12th, deserted at Bayou Meto, AR on August 12 1863. Olsey C. Dortch "enrolled" at Benton into the 4th Union Cavalry on Nov. 24 th 1863. What counties were Rockport, Bayou Meto and Benton in during the Civil War. This Newbie would like advice: how to research this situation; what resources are available . Rich Borges
