    2. Ian Curley
    3. Hi. I've been doing some research on my PEDEN family, and I find that Mary M. PEDEN, born 1850 in MS (sister of my great-grandmother) married Lemuel McGREW. They moved to Saline Co. around 1876 and were on the 1880 census there. At least some of the descendants of this family apparently remained in Saline County, so I thought I'd check to see if there is anyone on the list with a connection to the McGREW or PEDEN families. If so, I'd be very glad to hear from you. Margaret Curley [email protected]

    3. Source: GC- Grady Co. Ok Obituaries URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/GradyObits?read=314 From: Sandi Carter <[email protected]> Subject: MARY ISABELLE [KELLEY] MECOY Surname: KELLEY, MECOY, TAYLOR ------------------------- The Verden News February 24, 1922 Mary Isabelle Kelley was born in Saline county, Arkansas, September 11, 1870, moved with her parents to Texas at the age of thirteen, two years later she was converted and placing her faith in Christ she became a member of the Methodist church. On September 20, 1891 she was married to A. T. Mecoy, at Liberty, Texas. In 1902 she and her husband moved to Oklahoma and located on a farm four miles northeast of Verden, where she lived until her death, which sad event occurred at 7:55 p. m. Thursday, February 16. Mrs. Mecoy was the mother of six children and in addition to these, she leaves to mourn her death, a husband, father and five sisters. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church Friday afternoon, Rev. Taylor of this place officiating. Her remains were layed to rest in our silent city followed by a large concourse of relatives and friends. This good mother ran the race of life in 51 years, five months and five days, she was a faithful wife and a kind and loving mother, a Christian and good neighbor, but the fiat of Him who rules the Universe has gone forth and she has taken her departure to the land from where no traveler returns. The sod over her bier will grow green and the loved ones will see her no more on this earth, but her memory will cling to those who knew and loved her as a priceless treasure. We extend our sympathy to all who mourn her loss. "Weep not that her toil is over; Weep not that her race is won, God grant that you may rest as sweetly, When, like hers, your work is done. Till then you should yield with gladness Your loved one to him to keep, And rejoice in the sweet assurance, He gives his loved ones sleep."

    3. Katrina, My grandparents farmed and built a church (Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church) at the corner of old Hwy 5 and Alcoa. When I was there (visited every summer for 14 years) this was "out in the country". I went back for one last look in summer of '97 and it is now a major highway (Hwy 5) and Alcoa is a freeway offramp!!!! The farm is all locked up and totally overgrown. Absolutely breaks my heart!! I sat at the church, staring at the farmhouse and cried. The church is still in use...has about 30-40 members and has a 'Memory Book'/placque honoring my grandparents...so, at least 'something' is left. If I had the $$$ I'd buy that farm and make it into the "Harrison B&B"!!! Alas, I not only don't....I live in CA. I am planning a trip to AR this June (if all goes well with upcoming surgery, tomorrow). My two daughters are planning to go with me and see what we can do to get the old place on a historical register or??? I have been in contact with a woman at the church, so maybe I can enlist more help there. I really don't know if there's a cemetery behind the church or not. I only examined it from the front as it was locked up when I was there...think you can check it out when your there? It should be VERY close to Slate Branch Cemetery. Anyway, I just want to send some admiration and thanks your direction, for doing what your doing. I'm sure those family members of those in Slate Branch Cemetery do too!! Bren

    1. BAXLEY, RHODES, PARRISH, CANARD, KINNIARD
    2. These are my Saline CO. connections. All around 1880 are the ones that interest me. Have marr. of Martha Canard to Miriman Baxley, in Grant Co.( must have lived on Saline line, rest of the time Saline) 1884. She was my gggrandmother and my ggrandmother was 8 when she married Baxley. In later censuses both Baxley and my Canard say it is their 3rd marriage. And when ggrandmother Drucilla married Joseph Rhodes, both of Nuna, Saline Co., her name is spelled Kinniard. So name could be spelled many ways. Anyone ever run across that name in that area of research? I have lots to share concering Rhodes and Parrish of Saline Co. 1880 and after and back in Walker Co. GE before that. Some on the Baxley's from 1860 to 1910 Saline. Would love to share or have someone who may have access to better records then I have seen on internet and LDS. Kay

    3. I am trying to find ANY information on the following families who lived in Hot Springs County, Montgomery County, Garland County and Saline County. Manerva Thomas b. 1835 in Blount Co. Ala., m. Jacob J. Thomas in Tn or Al. before 1856. Two children known were Margaret J. Thomas b. ca 1856 and Melissa E. Thomas b. 1861. Jacob died in the Civil War and after 1880 Manerva moved her family to Arkansas. She bought land in Montgomery Co. and when she died in 1898 she is buried at Howerton/Wildwood Cemetary in Montgomery Co. Margaret Thomas first married Robert Freeman before 1874 and had Hunter Nelson Freeman b. 1874, Donald A. Freeman b. 1877 and Alan W. Freeman b. 1879. We do not know what happened to Robert but in the late 1880's Margaret Thomas Freeman married James Wacaster Jr. in Garland or Montgomery Co. Ark. They had one son named Taylor and I believe there are still relatives living in the area that I would love to contact. Melissa Thomas m. John Franklin Harmon in the early 1880's. They had Joseph F. Harmon b. Sept. 1882 and Oscar Canada Harmon b. Hot Springs 1886. Melissa must have died (possibly in Saline County or Hot Springs County) as John F. Harmon married second, Ada A. Mullens (Melissa's cousin) in 1889 Saline County. John and Ada later moved to Oklahoma. What happened to Joseph A. Harmon. In 1908 on a land deed he is listed as married to Eugenia. Where were and when were they married? Melissa Thomas Harmon died between 1886 and 1889. Where? When? Donald Alan Freeman died after 1920's in Pulaski County, Ark. Where is he buried? Hunter Nelson Freeman died after 1940. Looking for any descendants of Hunter, Donald, Joseph Harmon and Oscar Harmon. Glenda SUit Boise, Id.

    3. I wanted to send this message out to inform people in Saline County of a concern of mine. Out highway 5 before you get to the Garland County Line in Saline County, there is a lot of commercial property being developed. In front of Slate Branch Cemetery there is a strip of commercial property that has just been marked SOLD, I do not know if this includes the cemetery in this land sale. I went last week and am going today to take photos of the cemetery and finish cleaning stones. There are quite a few of the stones that wasn't recorded in the 1975 survey. I don't know what will happen to this land where the cemetery now sets and was wanting to voice my concern. Katrina Johnson
