"MIKE" HAYNIE DIES ----- Succumbs After Illness of Several Weeks in Decatur, Ill. J. M. "Mike" Haynie, age 59, formerly sheriff of Pulaski County, died at 6:50 P.M. Wednesday at a Decatur Ill., hospital. He had been ill for several Weeks. Haynie was swept into office while the Ku Klux Klan was dominating Pulaski county political affairs. In April 1929. He resigned suddenly and he left Little Rock. So far as is known he never had returned to the city since. R. A. Cook, now county judge, was appointed by the governor to serve out Haynie's uncompleted term as sheriff. Haynie had begun a second term as sheriff and ex-officio collector about three months before he relinquished the office. For many years before his election as sheriff in 1926, Haynie had been a peace officer. He joined the Little Rock Police Department in 1905 and was a patrolman until 1919, when he was elected constable of Big Rock township. He was constable until 1923 when the legislature eliminated official duties of the office. Mr. Haynie was a duty under Homer M. Adkins when the latter was sheriff. He succeeded Mr. Adkins in the office. Haynie was a native of Vilonia, Faulkner county. He had been living at Decatur Ill. several years, and previously had lived at Memphis. He formerly operated a restaurant at Decatur. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Miss Gussie Haynie, deputy prosecuting attorney in charge of domestic relations for Pulaski county, and Miss Tressie Haynie, all of Little rock; two brothers, R. F. Haynie, a member of the little Rock Police Department, and W. E. Haynie of near Sweet Home, and two sisters, Mrs. Dora Stephens of Little rock and Mrs. James Joyner of Jacksonville. Members of the family were at Decatur Thursday. The body will arrive in Little Rock early Friday and will be removed to the R. F. Drummond and Co. parlors. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. ********************************* J.M. HAYNIE FUNERAL TO BE HELD SATURDAY Funeral services for J. M. "Mike" Haynie, former Pulaski county sheriff, who died Wednesday night at a Decatur, Ill., hospital, will be held at the R. F. Drumond & Co. chapel at 3 P.M. Saturday. The services will be conducted by Rev. Ernest C. Mobley. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be: Albert Haynie, Doyle Haynie, Gus Haynie, Finos Haynie, Eulan Haynie and George Haynie, all nephews, Chester Adams and Fred Adams.
