It was about in line with Spruce Street (?), which dead-ended into Markham. There was a huge grassy Mall with several institutions located on it, one being the Insane Asylum. The patients often walked on the Mall with family members or staff. I was a child and none of them looked "crazy" to me but when we were anywhere on the Mall my Mother would always be conscious of the possibility of "sick people" approaching. This memory is from 60 years ago, and I haven't been in LR since 1949, so it may be faulty.
No your memory is still pretty good. Yes the Insane Asylum was and still is on Markham Street, right where you said it was. It is beside the University of Arkansas Medical School. I have lived in Little Rock my entire life and I am 53, but the reason I didn't answer the original request is because there isn't much to tell. If you are looking for records of patients, you can pretty much forget that. I have never known anyone to get any documentation from the Insane Asylum or the cemeteries, no matter how hard they try. I had an Aunt there and I can tell you for sure that she was NOT insane, she was an alcoholic, which I think most of the patients were. I also know though that the bad ones (patients) were not allowed to walk outside, they were always locked up. My husband's grandmother was a nurse there and she told me that most of the people there, should not have been there, but didn't go too much into details. Also, this was before the time of hormone replacement therapy, and anti-depressants or tranquilizers. Seems like they had one sedative, but you weren't necessarily mobil after you took it, if I remember "The Snake Pit" movie of the late 1940's accurately.
