From my cousin, for whom I am doing some research, she says, concerning her dad, Cecil Young, and his siblings, Hazel and Parker: Daddy played baseball and he played first base on their ball team. He was also a Lefty. He stayed at the orpanage and never got adopted. He was sent out on work details. He lived there until he was grown up. I think somebody adopted Hazel when she was little, but not too little, because they were very close. Parker was an epileptic and was in an institution and died of pneumonia there when he was a young man. I have pic of him and Daddy when they were about in their 20's. so I'm not sure when he died. My question: Does anyone know of any photos of children during this period, 1920's to early 1930's, and perhaps a photo or news item about the baseball team Cecil might have been on? Also, what sanitarium would Parker likely have been in?
For pictures and some info the History Commission does have the Catholic newspaper for Arkansas. That might be one avenue for information. I am sure there would be a story or two for instance on the baseball team. Orphans & baseball would make for a good human interest story
Don't know if you can get to the Arkansas History Commission, but the Arkansas newspapers are indexed and a heaven for genealogists or researchers. If you pulled the year 1920 (for instance), looked under the name of the orphanage or the person's name and found something, it would list the issue and page. You take that information to the clerks and they pull the microfilm for you, help you set it up and show you how to print (or they print it for you). The first time I walked in there and saw that wall of bound newspaper index volumes, I thought I'd gone to genealogy heaven!
