Hi, List - I have finally found my mother's notes from the early 90's where she named all the schoolmates she could remember from the school photograph made in about 1917. I will be happy to send anyone an email copy of the photograph and the name list who wants one. All the BRYANT children listed are the children of Asa Potter Bryant (TN) and Mildred Caroline Bridges (dau. John Wesley Bridges). Other surnames include: SCHMIDT, GANGLOFF, WIRT, STARKEY, GOSS, MISENHEIMER, ISON, BAUERS, PHILLIPS. Some children are unidentified. Mt. Carmel was north of Pulaski County, and had a "Route 1, Levy, AR" address. The Bryants lived on Batesville Pike in Mineral Township and had to walk to school, so it couldn't have been too far. The Bryant home was south of Cato, on the left before Roby Hanks' Garage if you are heading south from Cato. Hope this helps someone. Mildred

Yet, it is your information that prompts my response. My husband had an aunt that spent most of her adult life in the State Hospital that was at the time located in Benton, Saline County. She was committed in 1923-1924 following the death of her toddler daughter. She had two young sons. My husband remembers visits to his Aunt Mary when he was a young boy - going with his mother who was Mary's sister. Naturally, I had to think the dear man of which you spoke might have been one of those young sons of Mary's. After learning the family's story, I, too felt that in today's time Mary might have been helped. I did find and send for a copy of Mary's committment papers. It stated that she became a danger to herself and others. Saline County is one of those fortunate counties that has not suffered loss of data from natural disasters, although it has had losses from deterioration. Many of these court cases were located in the late 1990s in the basement of the courthouse in Benton and set to be destroyed when an employee discovered what was in the boxes. They were subsequently rescued, cataloged, etc. So the Saline County archives website has indexes to what they rescued. Rather than cause distress to anyone still living and reveal Mary's surname, if you think the man's mother's name was Mary, I will happily accept an email to provide what information I have. kmpiper@gmail.com

I met with the same things several years ago when searching for my maternal grandfather who died in the State Hopsital in March 1917. There are just no records available that I was able to find. Might also try a ck w/the Pulaski Co Historical Society. They may have articles in their books. Not lists, but might give you some clues. Husband also had a cousin there, all we found was his name on the census as "inmate" and his marker in the family plot. Not a clue a to why he was there or how he died. He did come over w/the family, so he had to have been ok to have gotten past Ellis. Hi Is there a place you can write to see if you did have a relative in there. I have one I cannot find. I am also wondering if she did go into the asslyum as I don't think she had any relatives she could go live with in her laster years. She died in 1948 in Pulaska County. Oldest son of Joseph Calhoun Mathews and Margaret Brough. Ezekiel and his family do not appear on the 1850 Abbeville, SC census and is known to be gone from Abbeville when his father's will was probated in 1853. His children show up in Arkansas in late 1850's and during the Civil War are fighting with units in and around Ark. It is believed that sons Benjamin and John sold land in Batesville and moved to Little Rock in the 1880/90. Also sister Lucetia (m. James Shanks) died in Little Rock. Children were Mollie, Lawrence Calhoun "Coot", Ezekiel Jr., Benjamin, William, Andrew, Charner, John, Lucy and Lucretia. Mollie, Benjamin, William, John and Lucretia (Shanks) are known to have died in Ark. Andrew was a casualty of the Civil War, dying at the Battle of Belmont (MO) in 1861. Charner is said to have died in MS. Any information on this family would be appreciated.
