I don't think it's the same. James Cattin, 1820-1870, my great-grandfather -- a real "mystery man." He died before my grandmother's birth in January of 1871; so she never saw him. Her mother remarried within a few years (to a Samuel Warner, who died in the 1880s). My grandmother died in the 1940s, years before I was born. So everything my father knew was second or third-hand information. Supposedly, Cattin was born in Chicago, Illinois. He might have been the son (illegitmate son?) of John Kinzie or a natural son. He was, according to the old story, disinherited when he denounced the Catholic Church and renounced the priesthood, which he was about to enter. So, he changed his name, for some reason to Cattin. He was an M.D., lived in and aroound Dover/Russellville. Two daughters survived to adulthood. I have been in touch with an elderly grandaughter of the other daughter: She had heard the exact same stories: But doesn't know a bit more than I do. Genealogy is a frustrating endeavor. > To: [email protected] > Date: Fri, 7 May 2010 14:45:29 -0400 > From: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [ARPOPE] Galley Rock > > How about Catlin, there is a large family in Walker Co, GA Jean > > > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Stephen Smith <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > Sent: Fri, May 7, 2010 9:13 am > Subject: Re: [ARPOPE] Galley Rock > > > > f in your research you come across any mention of a Dr. James Cattin (sometimes > isspelled as Caton or Catton or even Cotton), I would be interested in knowing > bout it.
