    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: SelveyDG Surnames: St. John Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.arkansas.counties.perry/782.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Your father's grandparents must have been Columbus St. John and Eliza Rook. Eliza was the sister of Theresa Rook (my line), who married a brother of Columbus. Another Rook sister also married a brother of Columbus. It caught my attention that Walter St. John's headstone is engraved "Held POW 4 years in Corregidor", but he has no military grave marker. That is an unfortunate slight for an ex-POW. I found that V.A. furnishes headstones at no cost for unmarked veterans graves, and foot markers for all veterans who died after 1990- whether the grave is marked or not. Since Walter died in 1989, he's not eligible in either category. Very disappointing. The Prisoner of War Medal was first authorized in 1985, and Walter St. John is listed as a recipient, but he may have had to apply to receive it. Maybe there is a veteran's group or historical society in Perry County that can help get him the recognition he deserves. The attached photo was taken by Sharon Watson. Find A Grave Memorial # 80161062. I'll make a separate post to show some research on Walter St. John and Bataan-Corregidor. Be sure to read the last paragraph.
