Hi Raydene, I have been reading the posting from Perry Co, where I also have family. My gggrandfather Robert Huggins was in Perry Co in the 1870 census with most of his family, I think he may live on the property that he got earlier in 1870 from a land grant. I have not found him in the 1880 census so I presume he may have died there in Perry Co. I have the Perry Co Cemetary book and none of the family is listed in there either. I think my only chance maybe to find when the property was sold or divided among his children when he died. Who can I contact to get this inormation, I have land discription etc.? Would there be any obits back that far? And would he be apt to be buried on his own property? Any help would be greatly appreciated. [email protected]
Rayedene, again thank you for your response. There is no funeral home mentioned, just O.O. Oates as the undertaker, Perry, AR, I saw his name in the 1920 Pettit Jean Township census and it listed his occupation as a retail merchant, he may have done undertaking on the side. Thank you for the idea of contacting the caretaker, I will give that a try. Did the death cert name the funeral home? Also, there may be a caretaker for the cem that would have a written ledger of the people buried there, even if they have no headstone. There is no cem with a name close to McGhee. And, I ckd each cem for Smith and did not find an Elizabeth. As far as the baby is concerned, I don't know of any way to get any other info on her, unless you could get an obit. My gg grandfather died in 1912 and I have not been able to find his grave and that was too early for a death certificate. I will have to wait until I can get to Perry Co to search the newspapers of that time for an obituary. That would be my only hope, I think. Possibly yours, too, for the baby and your grandmother. Anything else I can help you with let me know. Rayedene

Rayedene, thank you for your response, I do not know where to go now for grandmother unless she is in an unmarked grave, what do you suggest? However, the Edna E. is probably my half-sister that I am named after. I do not have any information on her except she died of a fever at age 3, this is close. She would not have been two yet. How would I find more information on her? Could there be another cemetery with a close spelling, this is really difficult to read, but McGhee is close to my Dad's farm at that time. Again thank you for your help. -----Original Message----- From: deeno [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, December 17, 2000 2:13 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ARPERRY-L] Attn: Rayedene ref. Rayedene: on Oct 31 you sent me a message regarding the death index for Perry County, in reference to my grandmother Elizabeth Wade Smith. Today I finally rec'd the death certificate in the mail and it is my grandmother. With some of the information I gained from the certificate I was able to find her family in the 1850 census and found my dad and her in the 1920 census. Just wanted to say thank you very much. Now, I have another question. The certificate stated my grandmother was buried in the McGhee Cemetery. I found a map and the cemetery is located between Adona and Perry it appears to be on Hwy 10. I was hoping someone doing the cemetery lookups, might be able to find her grave or give me some advice. She died 3-23-1923. Any help would be appreciated, I am still looking for other relatives, if I could find her obituary. A big thank you and Merry Christmas. Edna Dudley [email protected]

Hi Rayedene, Thanks for the quick response. Now that I have John Jrs middle initial and birthdate, it might be an easier thing to find out. I will contact the courthouse and try to get the records on both Mr Howell and Mr Moore. It would be nice to find out more about the murder - I know it haunted my dad and uncle knowing that their father was murdered and nothing being done about it. I will let you know what I find out... Bill, The only ones I have are from the cem bk. Are there more? I have found some mistakes in the listings of my family in the Volman cem, so I am always looking. I recd the land records for my Frank GARDNER from 1906. A John Magie(age 54) was a witness as well as Alex McGrew(age 42), Billy Bean and John Douthit. I didn't find John Magie in the cem bk. I don't know who John Douthit is but there is one in the Nooner cem(no dates) Blacksmith in the AR calvary. Billy Bean and John Douthit's aff. were not included in my file, but there was a notice from the Perry Co News with the posting of the property and the names were included. Billy Bean was Frank Gardner's son-in-law. Sure wish I could connect with some of the family that I know must still be in Perry Co. Frank had 13 children! So, there has to be descendents other than me! Lee, I have looked thru the cem bk and do not see McKey or McKee. There are lots of McGhee entries and several Magie. I ckd each and none look as if they are yours. Did they die in Perry Co? There were also no Sawyers and no mention of them in the Adona article. Paula, In the Perry Co Centennial bk, there is an article on Adona. I will include just excerpts. "In 1849 Franklin Russell filed on a claim where Adona now stands. Russell became dissatisfied with his location and sold the claim to John Howell, who became Adona's first permanent resident. At this time the area was called Cypress Valley." "Along with the Howells, others came....Fowler, Mitchell, Jones, Adney, Smith and Leach. In the surrounding countryside were Wades, McGhees, Baskins, McCabes, Bennets and Kings." "In 1893 the post office was established and the community was named Adona, after Adona Howell, a direct decendent of John Howell." In the cem listings I find: FOWLER Cem Howell John R. Hi All, I am new to the Perry County list. I live on the west coast and I am very interested in finding out any information about my family from Adona... Does anyone out there know where I might find information on my grgrgrndfather, John Howell (Adona's first resident)? I know that he named the town after my grgrgrndmother, and according to the 1850 census, he was listed as the only parent of 6: William, Catherine, Robert, James, John (jr), and Thomas. I suspect that Adona may have died in childbirth, since the baby was only 1 yo. I am trying to find out who John's parents were and what county in NC that he was from. I am also trying to find information about my grandfather, William Moore b: 1888, d: 1922. He was married to Orah Bennett, and they had 3 children: Nova, Clyo and James (my father). Grandad died under "mysterious circumstances" when my father was only 8. My parents told us (children) that grandad was "kicked" by a horse. An older cousin said that there was an inquisition about grandad's death, but the results were inconclusive. Would Perry County have record of this available? Any assistance you all might give would be deeply appreciated! Regards, Paula Moore Riggs I have no other information about this family line.
I saw this site on another list. Great basic information on Arkansas counties. It can maybe help some people new to genealogy. www.segenealogy.com/arkansas Brent
