I have researched that area for years and have lots of info on Perry Co. I am not related to the Cates or Graves. Author: rockcityrose Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.arkansas.counties.perry/770.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Mary, I believe Philip Yancey Graves is related to my family, but the evidence is circumstantial, and I'll share about my Graves later. I think my parents were acquainted with your family. In 1900 Bascomb A. Cate and his sister, Amanda Cate were living with their widowed sister Annie (nee Cate) Barnett and her Barnett children in Fourche Lafave, Perry Co., AR. Annie married William B. Barnett 24 Dec 1891 Perry Co. By 1910 Philip Yancey Graves and his wife "Docie" Cate were deceased and their children were living with Docie's brother, Bascomb Cate in Stigler, Haskell Co., OK. Bascomb's sister Amanda Cate was erroneously enumerated in Bascomb's household as Amanda Graves in 1910. You'll have to view the census image to see why. Apparently Amanda Cate never married. William F. Cate, born ca. 1847 TN and his wife, Sarah Unknown, born ca. 1848 AR were enumerated in Perry, Perry Co., AR in 1870. Known children of William F. Cate and Sarah Unknown are: Annie Frances Cate Barnett Graves - born Dec 1872 AR Mary Theodocia "Docia" Cate Graves - born Mar 1874 AR Bascomb Adalphus Cate - born 27 Dec 1879 AR (WW I Draft Card) Amanda Cate - born Nov 1882 AR In 1880 Annie F. Cate, Mary Theodocia Cate and their baby brother, Bascomb Cate were enumerated in the household of their widowed father, William F. Kate (sic, Cate) in Bentley, Conway Co., AR. Included in the household were William F. Cate's brother, Alfred L. Kate (sic, Cate), born ca. 1858 IL. In 1860 William Cate and his brother, Alfred Cate were enumerated in Camp Point, Adams Co., IL in the household of their parents, William Martin Cate and Frances "Fanny" Flatford who married 13 Jul 1845 Jefferson Co., TN. William F. Cate married again in Perry Co. 22 Nov 1883 to Mrs. E. Sinclair. My 2nd great-grandfather, Philip Yancey Graves was born 8 Aug 1830 TN and died 6 Aug 1908 White Co., AR. His daughter, Penelope Elizabeth Graves married 1st 5 Apr 1877 White Co., AR Joseph Monroe Graves, grandfather of the younger Philip Yancey Graves. The marriage record indicates Joseph Monroe Graves was 59 years old when they married. Penelope married 2nd Noah Milton Parker and their son, Fred Davis Parker was my grandfather. It has taken me years to learn the connection of the two Philip Yancey Graves men. The older Philip Yancey Graves was the son of John Graves, born ca. 1800 TN and died 1841 Fayette Co., TN and Mary H. Yancey, born ca. 1805 NC and died after 1880 White Co., AR. I can find no connection to the younger Philip Yancey Graves' grandfather, James Monroe Graves' ancestors and John Graves who died 1841 Fayette Co., TN, but there has to be a connection, and I don't know John Graves' parents. In my opinion the younger Philip Yancey Graves' father, James Chillion Graves and his brother John Graves were enumerated in 1870 in White Co., AR in the household of the older Philip Yancey Graves and his wife, Elizabeth (nee Tingle) Hollis. Their ages and places of birth are wrong, but I cannot find James and John Graves on any other 1870 census. The older Philip Yancey Graves' step-daughter, Caroline Hollis married S. S. Haynie about 1868 in White Co., AR. I haven't been able to learn a connection to the younger Philip Yancey Graves mother, Sarah Catherine Haynie and S. S. Haynie. In 1877 in White Co., AR the older Philip Yancey Graves was administrator of the estate of Mary H. Haynie. Mary, years ago my parents did business with AP&L through Vance Butler and according to my deceased Mom, Vance was occasionally at their business. My brother lives near Germania and knows many of the Butlers. Beth Walls Walton Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I found the following info: 8/11/11 - EB - From 1910 Haskel County OK census Members: Name Age Bunscomb A Cate 30 (s/h Bascom) Nelly Cate 29 Winnie Graves 13 Frank Graves 11 Louis Graves 10 Robert Graves 5 Manda Graves 27 (should be Cates) The children are in the home of their Uncle and Aunt (apparently Bascomb was a brother to Annie). Mandy Graves is listed as a sister (?) Her name should be Cate. Census says Bascomb and Nelly had only been married a year. >From the 1920 Haskell County OK Census Bascom Cates 40 Nellie Cates 39 Adolph Cates 9 Rodger Cates 7 Bob Graver 15 (s/b Graves) Mandy Cater 38 (s/b Cates) I have not found anything on Docie that ties her to Annie or Mandy. In 1930 Mandy is listed with Bascom still in Haskell County Kansas. Name Age Barend A Cate 50 (Bascom) Holly J Cate 49 (Nelly) Adolf C Cate 19 Roger Cate 17 Amad M Cate 49 (Amanda) I did find marriage licenses in Perry County AR for P Y Graves and both Docie and Annie Cate, and also for Bascom & Nellie Morgan Cate on Familysearch.com Hope this helps someone.
