Author: rockcityrose Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.arkansas.counties.perry/770.1.2.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: You're welcome Susan. When Harold Smith was researching the family of James 'Chillian' Graves in 1999, I learned James named a son Philip Yancey Graves. I'm certain he and Sarah Catherine named him for my 2nd great grandfather who carried his mother's maiden name, Yancey. Harold wrote that Phillip Yancey Graves and his sister, Lucy Ann Graves were born in White Co. and the other children were born in Perry Co. In 1880 they were actually in Cypress Twp., Faulkner Co., AR, which is near Vilonia and not that far from White Co. Now James' second given name is being spelled Chillion. Some researchers of the Graves family have Sarah Catherine Haynie was born in White Co., AR, but she was born in Graves Co., KY where her parents, Thomas J. Haynie and Ann M. Bullock were enumerated on the 1850 census. Her father's 1 March 1860 Arkansas land patent has he was living in Prairie Co., AR at the time he acquired the land. The land was actually in Section 30, Lonoke Co. which was not formed until 1873 from Pulaski and Prairie Counties. The Bureau of Land Management has used legal descriptions on land patents and indicate on their web page the present day county where the land is. I've found one of Sarah Catherine's brothers in Arkansas in 1860, but haven't found her with her parents in 1860. They were enumerated in Caroline, Pulaski Co. in 1870, which in present day is near Austin in Lonoke Co. Last night I found the widower, Joseph Monroe Graves and his two sons, James Chillion Graves and John Joseph Graves in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KY in 1860. 1850 Dist. 2, McCracken Co., KY Joseph M. Graves 30 KY Occupation: School Teacher L. A. 27 VA Lucy Ann Smoot James C. 9 KY James Chillion John J. 7 KY John Joseph Elizabeth Faulkner 15 KY KY death records indicate the daughter of John Smoot, L. A. Graves, age 38, born in VA, died 16 Apr 1859 Hopkinsvills, Christian Co., KY of Typhoid Fever. The U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules, 1850-1885 for the year 1860 in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KY, Lucy Ann Graves, age 40, born in VA, died Apr 1860 of Disease of lungs. The mortality schedule that year began 31 May 1859 and ended 1 Jun 1860. 1860 Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KY J. M. Graves 40 KY Male - Occupation: Deputy Sheriff J. C. Graves 20 KY Male - Student James Chillion J. J. Graves 17 KY Male - Student John Joseph Here are Penelope Elizabeth Graves' White Co., AR marriage records, including the question mark by Joseph's age as per the record on the White Co., AR web page. I'm certain he was fifty-seven, and the transcriber couldn't tell if his age in numbers on the record were 57 or 59. 5 Apr 1877 Graves, Joseph M, age 59? Graves, Penelope, age 20 By Knox, W S 26 Feb 1879 Graves, Mrs. P. E., age 21 Parker, N. M., age 23 By W. S. Knox No one in my Mom's family knew about Grandma Penelope's first child, born Jan 1880. Note that she and Noah named their daughter Josephine. Was she named for Joseph Graves? 1880 Union Twp., White Co., AR N. M. Parker 24 AL MS AL Pennie 22 MS TN TN Josephine 5 months AR AL MS Jackson 18 AL MS AL (Noah's brother) I looked at the Kentucky death records for proof of Joseph Monroe Graves' 1878 Kentucky death without any success. Harold Smith wrote in 1999 tha Joseph M. Graves died after . My family lore is great-grandpa, Noah Milton Parker married the rich widow Penelope. "Rich" to them could have meant Joseph left her a little money or some land. I don't think they knew her maiden name was Graves and that she married 1st Joseph Monroe Graves. I guess that makes us shirttail cousins, Susan! ~Beth Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
