Gerdes Arkansas Civil War page by Bryan R. Howerton, who we thank so much. Web Page Address: <<http://www.insolwwb.net/~egerdes/2batcava.html>> This cavalry company was organized by Captain Alexander Mason at Hampton, Calhoun county, Arkansas, on February 20, 1862. When the Second Arkansas Cavalry Battalion was formed at Memphis, Tennessee, in April 1862, Mason's troop was designated as Company A. Captain Mason resigned on May 12, 1862, and was succeeded by Captain Philip Henry Echols. On May 15, 1862, the Second Arkansas Cavalry Battalion was combined with the Sixth Arkansas Cavalry Battalion to form the Second Arkansas Cavalry Regiment, with the Calhoun County Troop becoming Company H. During the regimental reorganization on August 18, 1862, the company's designation was changed to Company G. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ June 1, 1999 EMail message from Bryan Howerton, Gerdes Civil War Researcher follows: Bill, "A little background information for your records on Whitley C. Haynes' service in the 6th Arkansas Infantry. This volunteer company, calling themselves the "Calhoun Yellow-Jackets", was formed in Calhoun County, Arkansas. They enlisted at Hampton on May 25, 1861, and shipped out for the big troop staging area at Pittman's Ferry (near Pocahontas, Arkansas). The company was organized for the purpose of defending the State of Arkansas, and was assigned as Co. B, 6th Regiment Arkansas State Troops. In July, 1861, the Governor offered the Arkansas State Troops to help defend the new Confederate States of America. All of the troops were expected to enlist in Confederate service for a period of at least one year. A few of the State Troops refused to go along with this, stating that they had enlisted specifically for Arkansas State service. When the 6th Regiment Arkansas State Troops became the 6th Arkansas Infantry Regiment (CSA), the Calhoun Yellow-Jackets was one of those companies that declined to enter Confederate service, and thus were mustered out of service on July 26, 1861. The irony is that every one of them returned to Calhoun County and within a few months enlisted in other Confederate regiments and battalions. Whitley C. Haynes enlisted in Co. A, 2nd Arkansas Cavalry Battalion (CSA), and was subsequently transferred to Co. G, 2nd Arkansas Cavalry Regiment (CSA). Notes for Frances Ann 'Fannie' Sophronia Witherington: Frances Witherington appears on 1860 Calhoun CO census as age 17, born in AL. Frances (Haines) appears on 1870 Census as age 27. W. C. Haines as 30. 'Fannie' (Haines) appears on 1880 Census as age 37. M.C. Haines as 60 (? His age likely an error). Research of Virginia Witherington: L.L. Belton (23) marriage to Frances A.S. Witherington (18), on 27 June 1861 Bride: Witherington, Frances A. S. (18); Groom: Belton, Levidas L. (23) Date: 27 Jun 1861 Location: CALHOUN COUNTY AR at residence of Mrs. Witherington by Alex Mason, Clerk. Book A/Page 260 It is believed that Levidas. L. Belton was killed during the Civil War. Some information indicates that he died of disease at Meridian, Mississippi, June 10, 1862 In reviewing the research materials of Virginia Mae Witherington on May 9, 1999, Bill King discovered some handwritten and undated material that reads as follows: "Sister of A. D. (Alonzo Dawson) Witherington was Fannie (Francis) Witherington Hayes/Haynes. Her husband #2 was Chris Hayes/Haynes. Child of Fannie Witherington Haynes was: Arnissa Haynes Children of Whitley Haynes and Frances Witherington are: 5 i. Notes for Arnissa H. Haynes: Was call "Nessa". Notes for Lonnie M. Parker: Marriage Certificate of L. M. Parker (19-of Hampton) and Miss A.H. Haynes (23-of Champagnolle) dated 16 Aug 1897 was located at the Calhoun County Courthouse. J. E. Dunn signed security with L. M. Parker. Marriage was conducted by D. J. Williams, JP. According to info provided by Jesse Parker of Camden (10-98), Lonnie Parker's wife was known as 'Nessa'. Arnissa Haynes was the dau of Whitley Chris Haynes and Frances Ann 'Fannie' Sophronia Witherington. Also, located at the Calhoun Courthouse was the marriage licence of W.P. Parker (39) and Miss Alice Haynes (25), dated 3 Aug 1899, marriage conducted by T. F. Wisinger, JP. Lonnie Parker signed as security on the Marriage Bond. W. P. Parker and wife Alice, are thought to be the William Parker family that Arthur Edward King and son, William R. King (age 2) were living with on the 1900 Calhoun/Fayette census, near the Kate King farm located below Artesian. Arnissa Haynes and Alice Haynes were sisters. 7 iii. James Haynes, born Abt. 1873 (Source: Virginia Witherington Research Materials.); died Unknown. 8 iv. Mattie Haynes, born Abt. 1878 (Source: Virginia Withering Research, 1880 Calhoun County Census.); died Unknown. 9 v. (Son) Haynes, born Bet. 1879 - 1880; died Unknown. She married (1) Thomas L. King October 13, 1896 in Calhoun County, AR; born Abt. March 1874 in Calhoun CO, AR (Source: 1900 Calhoun CO/Fayette Census.); died Bef. 1914 (Source: 1914 Probate of Will of Catherine Caroline King (Harris).). She married (2) William P. Parker August 03, 1899 in Calhoun County, AR; born Abt. 1860 (Source: Calhoun CO Marriage Certificate.); died Unknown. Notes for Alice Haynes: Calhoun County Marriage Records: 1) Thomas L. King (22-Calhoun Co) to Alice Haynes (21-Calhoun Co) on Oct 13, 1896. Book 'F', page 18. 2) Wm P. Parker (39) to Alice Haynes (25) on 3 Aug 1899, Marriage Book F-218. 3) L. M. Parker (19) to A. H. Haynes (23-Champagnolle) on 18 July 1897, Marriage Book F-77. Alice Haynes (??) married William Parker. See 1900 Calhoun/Fayette Ark Census. Wm Parker & Allis (married less than a year-no children) are living near the farm of Mrs. Kate King (widow of Wm R. King). No proof, but good possibility because of the Haynes-King-Parker relations in south Calhoun County about this period. Notes for Thomas L. King: Thomas was oldest child of James & Elizabeth King. He is found in the 1880 Calhoun/Franklin census at age 5. He is next found in the 1900 Calhoun/Moro census living with the Alonzo Witherington Family # 199. Thomas is shown as 26 & wife Martha A. as 19, married 1 year. Thomas is mentioned as being deceased in the will of Catherine C. King when probated in 1914. His four children were represented by guardian, J.S. McKnight, and received $1 each as specified in Kate King's will. Calhoun County Marriage Records: 1) Thomas L. King (22-Calhoun Co) to Alice Haynes (21-Calhoun Co) on Oct 13, 1896. Book 'F', page 18. 2) T.L. King (25-Union Co) to Martha A. Merritt (18-Union Co) on April 2, 1899, Book 'F', page 196. Copy of marriage Certificate obtained from the Calhoun CO Court Records, Cert. # F-196. dated 2 April 1899, ceremony conducted by T.F. Wisinger, JP. T. C. Haynes signed security bond. Both Thomas (25) and Martha A. Merritt (18) are shown to be from Champagnolle in Union County. <<Note: this could be in error, as they probably lived in Champagnolle Township in Calhoun County.>> Federal Land Records: Calhoun County, Arkansas: KING, THOMAS L. Section 10 T: 16S R: 13W 40 Acres 1906/06/30 Notes for William P. Parker: Located at the Calhoun Courthouse was the marriage licence of W.P. Marriage Records, Book F-218. Parents of W.P. Parker are unknown, but his date of birth, 1860 (as suggested on the marriage records to Alice Haynes), would tend to lead us to believe that he could be a younger son of Moses & Atha Parker, and a younger brother of George Washington Parker (1st husband of Sallie Harris Parker King). _____________________________ ----- Original Message ----- From: <lde44@ev1.net> To: <AROUACHI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 22, 2002 7:55 PM Subject: [AROUACHI] Hayes Family This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XV.2ADI/388 Message Board Post: I am looking for information on the William Hayes family living in the Liberty Township in 1850 along with the Alexander Livingston family. I am trying to piece together a puzzle in my family. My g.g. grandfather, William Henry Hayes, said he was born in Ouachita County near Camden, Arkansas, on his Confederate pension application, but there is no listing of parents or siblings. He had to get the testimony of a Warren Livingston, who grew up with him in the county to help prove he had served in the army since they couldn't locate his name. After the war he moved to Navarro County, Texas, and so did Warren Livingston. I found on the 1850 census for Liberty Twnship in Ouachita County the William Hayes family with a son, William H. age 5, which would be correct for my g. g. grandfather, and then there was the Alexander Livingston family with a son Warren, age 4. I think this could possibly be them, but I am looking for some more evidence. Any help would be appreciated.
