The Caddo were in the area. http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/arkansas/ Gives you some idea. The name Ouachita comes from two Choctaw words "oua' and 'chita', translated "big hunt". There are many reports of artifacts found in the county and there are burial indian mounds locted near the river in the county. As far as I know because of treaties and such they surrendered land and if they moved to other reservation territories outside of the state.

OUACHITA COUNTY, ARKANSAS JULY 1900 Researching the JAMES M. KING (born1848- died after 1900) family that lived in Washington township in Ouachita County, AR at the time of the July 1900 Census. Searching for death & burial records for JAMES M. KING (he died after July 1900). ----------------------- James King is last found on 1900 census of Ouachita CO, Washington Twnsp, Family #348, ED 134, page 18 with wife, Elizabeth, and 5 of their 10 children, Jessie (15), Albert (11), Bessie (7), Linnie (4), & Bobie (3). Living nearby were sons, William C. (23) & Garland (17). James (age 52) is shown to have been born in Arkansas in April 1848. All children are shown as born in Arkansas. James was a farmer living on rented land (likely was a sharecropper) and could neither read nor write according to the census record. It is thought that James died shortly after the 1900 census and never moved to Grant Parish in Louisiana with his children. James M. King was also mentioned as "deceased-heirs of" in the 1914 probate of the will of Catherine Caroline King, who had married James' younger brother, William R. King, in Calhoun County in 1882. No record of James' death or place of burial has been located to date. 1900 Ouachita County Census/Washington Township/located on west side of Ouachita River July 1900 Family # 348 James King April 1848/52/AR/GA/GA ?
