    1. Re: [AROUACHI] Leake family and Leake's Store Township c.1850
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/XV.2ADI/425.1.2.1 Message Board Post: My information shows that Samuel Leake was born 1800 in South Carolina and married Elizabeth (born 1807) in SC. In the 1860 census in Ouachita County, Arkansas, his family appears in Leake's Store Township in the area that later became part of southeastern Nevada County when it was formed in 1871. Samuel's children are shown as Charles W. 21 (born SC) (merchant), James D. 16 (born MS), Jane L. 13 (born MS). Also in their household in 1850 was Miss H. Cobb 18 (born SC). It appears this Miss Cobb was probably a niece to Samuel's wife Elizabeth since her maiden name is said to have been Cobb. It appears that Samuel's son Charles W. Leake was probably the proprietor / manager of the store located near or on the Leake Plantation. I have not run upon any additional info about this store or the plantation but would like to know more if anyone has research them. In my own family passed down by oral tradition and recorded in our published family genealogy, my ancestor William Barham was overseer on the Old Leake Plantation for two or three years when he first arrived in Arkansas (1849-1851). Wm. Barham was well educated and from an early gentry family of VA and NC. He was the son of James Barham and Prudence Freeman Dunn. He was a Presbyterian, was born in 1796 Guilford Co NC and also lived in Logan & Calloway Co KY and Henry Co TN before coming to Ouachita Co AR in 1849. His wife was Susannah Fortner, whose father Lewis was a well-known Baptist minister of NC, KY MO. The earlier posting said that McClures and Cobbs were related to these Leakes, however, I am unaware of any Barham or Fortner connections to McClures or Cobbs. If anyone sees any additional connection of my Barhams to the Leakes, please let me know. Thanks.

    2. Ed Sanders
    3. Locust Bayou Precinct was in Ouachita County in 1850. n 1860, and after, it was part of Calhoun County. If you check the censuses after 1850, you may find some of what you are seeking. It is still a live community. I went to school there in the 1940s. Take a look at 1860 census, Locust Bayou, Calhoun County. 1. [AROUACHI] Accidental Shooting in Camden - African American Hayes/Hays Children
    2. Gail Banes
    3. (searching African Americans w/surnames, Hayes/Hays, East, Morgan, Hodges, Nunn, Seay in Camden, AR) Around 1890, there was supposedly an accidental shooting that took place in Camden, involving a brother and sister, both were African American. The sister, Lena Hayes was around 5 yrs old and the brother, I think was named John or Johnnie was not much older or maybe I have the ages reveresed. Is there anyway I could find out information this? In a previous email, I was told that the deaths of Black folks back in those days were usually only reported in the paper if it was something sensational or a crime was involved. Anyone have any suggestions of how I could research this? Thanks in advance. Gail H. Banes Cleveland, OH Try Everything, You Have Time Gail H. Banes [email protected]
