Author: poohfan61 Surnames: Hurst Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.arkansas.counties.ouachita/1477.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There is a John C. Hurst in Ouachita County, Arkansas is Valley Township in 1920. That census record notes the following: He was born in Missouri around 1873, able to read and write, renting their home. His wife's name is Mary J Hurst age 47, children or family with him include Frank 22, Margaret 20, Johnie 18, Hutie 16, Mildred 11, and William 9. John's father was born in Germany and his mother in Illinois based on the census. Mary's parents were born in Illinois and it notes that Frank was born in Illinois. His daughter Margaret was born in Arkansas. This would put John & Mary in Arkansas around 1900. It notes John is a foreman at a Saw Mill and Frank is a blacksmith. Johnie (the son) is noted as working at a sawmill as well as a laborer. The 1930 Census sheds a little more light. It lists his wife of 21 years as Belle - so she may have been Mary Belle or either name may have been an endearment or real name. It again mentions John's dad was born in Germany and th! is census notes his mother was from Sweden (have you looked at Ellis Island records for his parents?) John's wife's Father was born in Illinois but her mother born in North Ireland. John's occupation is a filer at a furniture factory in this census. His daughter Mildred's last name is given as Goodwin and his grandson (Mildred's son) is listed as Cecil GOodwin age 2. This indicates that both John and his wife were born in Missouri. The family is living in Camden at this time. They have a boarder living with them - Lloyd Overton that was an insurance agent. Now keep in mind that census information isn't always 100% accurate. Sometimes the census maker didn't acquire full information or get it accurate and at times whomever was interviewed for the census didn't give completely correct information for personal reasons or just accidently gave misinformation. I find a John Hurst born in Missouri that is age 7 in the 1880 census. Now he is living with his parents William! and Anne Hurst in Lone Oake, Bates County, Missouri. The age fits an d everything - but here it mentions that John's parents were born in KY not overseas. (it's a possibility KY is wrong) The 1900 census of Nevada County, Arkansas ( a neighboring county of Ouachita) lists a G. Belle Hurst, age 25, born in Illinois, father's birthplace unknown and mother's birthplace as Illinois. With her are 3 children, Mattie age 5 (possibly died before 1920 census or married), Frank age 3 and Margaret age 8/12 It lists G. Belle (Mary) born in June 1874, Mattie born Aug 1894 in Illinois, Frank born May 1897 in Illinois. It indicates the children's father is born in Missouri. It states that G. Belle has had 4 children adn 3 are living. (they lived in Missouri township) Hopefully there will be some new clues in here for you. Happy Ancestry hunting. All of the community's young people knew the patriarchs as "Uncle Billy BYARS" and "Uncle Joab BYARS." The BYARS and CHAMBLISS families were connected, I believe. They could also have been connected with the large LINDSEY family in the community. We had great respect for the whole family. They lived as if they were very poor, but rumor had it that both of these patriarchs were "comfortably fixed," as the neighbors expressed it. Would appreciate an opportunity to examine the records for connections. All of us had little to show for a hard life of farming on marginal land, but we shared what we had and respected our neighbors. Family travel was by mule wagon. The community had no autos until after World War 2. Attending church was a favorite and enjoyable family activity. (not ressearching this family - just researched a little on line :) ) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Yes, I am sure we have corresponded before. I remember your concern about your family’s property lost in the Holiday Inn fire. My children —3 families—daughter, son, daughter, stayed there when we were in Camden for my parents’ funerals. I visited them there and saw the displays you have mentioned. I was in Camden a few days ago and the Holiday Inn property is apparently abandoned. The city needs to require HI to clean the property and get rid of the accident hazards. It is a total loss but will remain an unsightly mess until Camden requires its ordinances to be followed. I have checked the early land records of the Bureau of Land Management office which was in Camden in the 19th century and have located the following records: Surname GiveName Section Township Range Acres Date KNIGHT RICHARD 5 13S 19W 0 1860/04/02 KNIGHT RICHARD 6 13S 19W 0 1860/04/02 KNIGHT RICHARD 6 13S 19W 160 1860/04/02 KNIGHT THOMAS A 32 11S 19W 40 1860/09/01 KNIGHT THOMAS A 4 12S 19W 0 1860/09/01 KNIGHT THOMAS A 4 12S 19W 119.4 1860/09/01 KNIGHT THOMAS A 5 12S 19W 0 1860/09/01 KNIGHT THOMAS A 6 13S 19W 0 1860/09/01 KNIGHT THOMAS A 6 13S 19W 80 1860/09/01 KNIGHT THOMAS A 6 13S 19W 40 1860/09/01 Perhaps this will be of interest to you. I remember Knight’s Landing quite well and taking my family swimming there when we lived in Shumaker. Next, I want to check Dallas County records for locations of the KNIGHTs in that county. My wife’s aunt, Savannah SEALE, mrd Ed KNIGHT in Pine Grove and brought up a family there. I married Evelyn SEALE of Pine Grove and we had three children—girl, boy, girl—born in Camden. I was Plant Engineer for the Shumaker Ammunition Depot July 1949-July 1955. I then preached for Churches of Christ in that area plus El Dorado, Crossett, Bossier City, Minneapolis, and Fort Worth, and in Central AR for 50 years. I was appointed a professor in Harding University in 1973 and retired from there in 1993. Evelyn died a year ago on my birthday (07 Feb). I still live in Searcy and am a Life Member of both the Ouachita-Calhoun Genealogical Society, and a Life Member and 4 times President of the Arkansas Genealogical Society. I will be happy to help you with your research in whatever way I can. God bless. Ed Sanders In 1850, I find KNIGHT, William B., 32; Narcissa C., 20; of NY and AL, with Henry A., 4; Maria L., 2; dwelling 270, Caddo Twp, Clark Co, AR. And, KNIGHT, Woodson, 53 NC, Dwelling 101, Polk Twp, Dallas Co, AR.
