    1. [AROUACHI] John Wilson
    2. I recently saw an article in the Banner Newspaper in Lawrence Co. Mississippi dated Jan. of 1838. It mention a John Wilson the head of the house of rep. in Arkansas pulled out his Bowie knife and killed a another member of congress. His name was removed from his position, and he was charged with murder. This may maybe a wild idea, but I have a John Wilson living in Pike or Lawrence county Mississippi, who married Mary Jane Norman, her 2nd marriage, her maiden name was Newman. On the 1840 census she is the head of the household with 3 children. My great great grandfather was born in December of 1838. There was also a John Wilson who was a land surveyer in the Louisiana buy from France. I sent to all addresses that he might be connected. Any help would be appreciated. 3. Flora, I am a professor retired from Harding University in Searcy, White County, AR, but was born in Ouachita County in 1928. The Arkansas Gazette has been published in AR since 1819 and published early marriages as they occurred for some of those early years. The Harding University library should be open tomorrow and it has a lot of early marriages within the state listed. Fortunately, it is also indexed prior to the 1900s so there is a chance that I can locate the ROBERT SMITH--AMANDA DOLLARHIDE union. I cannot tell you what the odds are that I can find it, but that is a source which predates the lightening-strike fire which leveled the Ouachita County Courthouse in 1875. So it is another place to look. You can estimate the date of the marriage by discovering them in the 1850 census and learning the age of their first child. Unless the wife was extremely young she generally produced a child by or before the end of the first year of marriage. 3. Hello Peggy, I don't have siblings of my Robert Smith yet, but would love to exchange info. It sounds like we may be on the same track, simply because Robert names a son, Rufus Brooks Smith. This Robert gives place of birth as AL in 1850, then in 1860 as VA. He had kids in Alabama from at least 1831 to 1839 - 1840. Then I find him in Hempstead County, AR. A bible says his son by second wife, Amanda Dollarhide, was born in Ouachita County at Louann AR. Robert is gone from the census by 1870. Possibly killed in Civil War, or just died, because he was born about 1808. Robert was listed as age 52 on the 1860 census. Rufus Brooks, his son, was born about 1848- 1849 according to the census records. Is this your bunch? Hope we have a connection. Can't wait to hear back. 3. Flora The Ouachita County Court house burned down, all marriage records start at Dec 1875. You would need maybe a bible record or a anouncement from a news paper. For a marriage date that early. 3. Hello List, I am new to the list and need help. I am searching for a marriage record for ROBERT SMITH to AMANDA DOLLARHIDE and I think they may have married in Ouachita County, Arkansas about 1842 - 1844. Their third son was born about 1848 in Louann, Ouachita County, AR. Does anybody know if those marriage records are online anywhere? If not, can anybody tell me where the court house for this county is located and do they have marriage records for that time frame.......1842 - 1850. If the marriage was before 1842 would the records be in Union County. I am not from Arkansas. Hopefully someone can tell me about those old records and where they might be located. Thank you, Flora

I see that others have supplied the text of the Longview Monument on the Saline River. Many of those voyagers continued down the Saline to its merger with the Ouachita River at Mare Saline, where they began to travel UPSTREAM , first to Champagnolle, near present-day El Dorado in Union County, then toward Ecore Fab're, now known as Camden, county seat of Ouachita County. They disembarked south of Camden, at Frenchport and immediately began "walking and marking" land. I attended school with Edward and David FOGLE, graduating with David from Fairview High School in 1945. Both Edward and David are deceased. Also, I had the great pleasure to have Mr. PEDRON in the church of Christ for which I preached in Cullendale, a suburb of Camden which was built near an International Paper Company mill about 3 miles south of Camden. He also allowed me to fish on an oxbow lake on his property. He was a gentle and generous old man.
