My history is much like yours but both my late mom (Ethel Mary PETERSON) and my late wife (Evelyn SEALE) were from Dallas County so I still do a lot of researching there. Looks like most of your family is buried in Macedonia Cemetery, as you indicated; at least 13 of them are. Macedonia is a large well- kept cemetery where burials continue to be made in 2007. Bill, I have no information on this family, but it would not be strange that a WITHERINGTON family was there, since many Ouachita and Calhoun families went west in the time of the Civil War (1861-1865)--so many, in fact, that many delinquent courthouse tax records were labeled by the clerk, GTT--"Gone To Texas." I suspect you meant to label this record as "1950 Wink County Census," since 1830 census records would not have listed family members by name. It was 1850 when the census began to list each family member by name. Keep the good stuff coming! I save it all. Best wishes to you and Lynn. Ruby, Arkansas History Commission One Capitol Mall, 2B-215 Little Rock AR 72201 has the state's best collection of publications such as you have in mind. Hello! I'm a native of Arkansas, born in Camden and lived there until 1943. During WWII, we moved to Prescott, Arizona. For the past 50-years, I have lived in Phoenix, Arizona and have been researching my Daniell family for some 25-years or so during visits to Arkansas, by library work, correspondence, etc. Now I am not able to travel because of health problems. My Daniell family, John S. Daniell, wife and ten children, migrated from Monroe County, Mississippi, about 1850 to Bradley County, Arkansas. During one of the county boundary line moves, their land ended up in Dallas County. My parents, Fred Jewell Sr and Etta Matilda (Watson) Daniell lived in Camden (where I was born) from 1926 to 1943. My father continued to live in Camden but died in Hampton, Calhoun County, Arkansas in 1968. He is buried in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery near Dalark (now extinct). My question is whether or not there are indexed newspapers existing (on film) for Ouachita, Calhoun, Bradley and Dallas Counties for the period of 1850 to 1950? Thank you! Witherington of Calhoun County (brother of Martha Caroline), was also enrolled by Capt Nolan at Chapagnolle June, 1861. He also served with the 3rd Arkansas Infantry Regiment. Witherington was born 1836, so he would have been about 25 at the time. Witherington lived in the area of South Calhoun County, down below the old community of Artesian, and only a few miles north of the community of Chapagnolle in Union County. The Ouachita River separates these two communities. *************** The following message was received 6-23-98 from Patrick Layton, Arkansas Civil War researcher, via E-Mail . "I don't know how much info you would like so I will send you a "little of every thing!" The 3rd Ark. Inf. was the only Ark. unit to fight the whole war in the east with the Army of Northern Virginia. General Lee once called the men of the Texas Division, of which the 3rd Ark was a part, the "Jewel of the Confederate Army Your John T. King's unit, Company "E" recruiting district was in and around the town of Champagnolle, Union County. This is where your J.T. King name first appears in the rolls of the company. His Captain was Thomas F. Nolan. After enlisting, the men marched to Gaines Landing, where they boarded the steamboats that took the units up the Mississippi for Memphis on June 20, 1861. >From there they went to Lynchburg, Virginia where they were formed into the 3rd Arkansas Infantry. The men of the 3rd came from 5 diffferent countys all over southern Arkansas. As you said, the 3rd Ark was in most of the major battles of the war. Here is a list of them...... King is listed in the "APPOMATOX PAROLE LIST" as Fourth Sergeant J.T. King, dated April 9, 1865. I guess you might say these boys got around!!!! Due to a great many men killed and wounded through the years of the war, the number of men left at the end of the war were a far cry from the 1300 plus men listed in the rolls of the 3rd. when they first started. Of the 90+ men that marched out of Champagnolle in 1861, only your J.T. King and 17 others were left of Co. "E" at the Appomatox surrender. The 3rd Ark. 'battle flag' hangs in the Old State House in Little Rock today. Patrick Layton, Civil War Researcher G-G-grandson of Pvt. G.W. Rowland, Co.
