    3. Perhaps I should explain more about how to locate places in Arkansas. The state has 75 counties. Each county is divided into a number of Townships. There is no set number of Townships in any County. There is no set size for a Township either. These are known as Congressianal Townships. They are there for voting precincts. They were set up before the days of easy transportation. Large streams might determine the location and size of a Township, because people had to be able to reach their polling places--which would probably be schoolhouses, church buildings, or even business buildings. Such townships are named rather than numbered--maybe names such as Mount Holly Township, Big Woods Township, or Sweetwater Twp, reflecting some permanent characteristic of the subdivision. There is a second type of Township, which is used to measure and locate land. These do have to be of a certain size. Land in states organized after the Revolution are laid out in numbered squares 6- miles on a side so that there are 6 miles east and west and 6 miles north and south. These townships contain 36 Sections of land each. In states so divided, each of the Sections is subdivided so that there 36 Townships East & West and 36 Ranges North and South. After you have studied a few maps and read a land title or two, these terms will become familiar. This is NOT my usual e-mail site because I am visiting my daughter and mailing from her residence. They are more than 200 miles apart. Alma is near the NW corner of AR, while Ouachita is in the south central. This is Ouachita county, and of course we will not have the marriages you are seeking. 3. You may want to contact the Arkansas History Commission, 2 Capitol Loop, Little Rock AR 72002. They have microfilmed newspapers from the era you are seeking. Such a bit of info as you are seeking is almost certainly indexed in the Arkansas Gazette, which I have access to in the library of Harding University, of which I am an emeritus professor. I will check the index at the first opportunity. 2. Ed, here is another 80 year old...81 in fact. You said something that caught my eye. I have been trying to find the burial place of Pleasant Henry Trower, who is supposed to have died in Quachita Co. (a town named Kirtland, which doesn't exist any more, apparently.), in 1868. Can you find him in a cemetery book there? His whole family lived in Flat River Barry co. Mo. at the time, so I can't figure out why he would be down there, but I can't find him in Mo. either. He was my g-g-grandfather. Patricia ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
