    3. Jeanette, >From the junction of Hwy. 57 and 387, go west toward White Oak Lake to the first curve. You will see a woods road or trail to your left. Follow the trail to the cemetery which is less than 1/4 mile. The trail may fork. If so, take the left fork. You will find the old cemetery to the left of the trail. Just keep following the trail and you will find the part of the cemetery with the new fence. If you have a pickup truck, you should be able to drive to both parts.

    3. Jeanette, As you leave the pavement on the little trail, the first graves you come to are what I call the Pharr Cemetery. Surnames found here include Box, Evans, Pharr, Rushing, and Toney. If you continue on the trail for another few hundred feet you will come to a newer section of the cemetery with a new wire fence and gate which was erected around this part of the cemetery within the last year. There is a sign Steele Chapel Cemetery at the gate. In this section you will find Cathey, Jones, and Rushing graves. This section appears to be maintained while the other part is not. Both are on the same tract (about two acres) and are separated by a wooded area. Whether they should be considered two cemeteries or one is the question.

    1. Re: [AROUACHI] Greenwood Cemetery
    2. Dear Jeanette; I don't know of another cemetery near the Pharr, or Steele's Chapel Cemetery. The site of the Steele's Chapel church was southwest of the junction of highway 57 and 76. It's my understanding there there was an African American church near Steele's Chapel, but it moved a few miles south to the junction of 57 and the Washington Post Road, which was where my Great Great Great Grandfather John Taylor Grayson and his family were living. He is buried at White Chapel Cemetery near the Washington Post Road and just west of the Ouachita and Nevada County line in Nevada County. The Steeles were a prominent family in the area at the time of the Civil War and I seem to remember one of the Steeles was an officer in the Arkansas 33rd Infantry CSA. I don't know if there is any family connection with General Frederick Steele who led the Union Army through the area in 1864 on his way to Camden. General Steele was a native New Yorker, I believe, maybe being born in Delhi, NY in Delaware County. He was killed in a buggy accident in San Francisco, CA a few years after the war. Fort Frederick Steele near Rawlins, Wyoming was named in his honor around 1875. It would be interesting if somebody could establish a connection between Gen. Steele, and the Steeles who established Steele's Chapel in Ouachita County. Keith Whitman Texarkana, TX

    1. Re: [AROUACHI] Greenwood Cemetery
    2. Pharr Cemetery is also known as Steele's Chapel Cemetery because there was a Methodist Episcopal Church South there from the time of the Civil War until it burned around 1910. One of my uncles and his wives are buried there because I have seen their headstones. My uncle was William Evans, an older brother of my Great Grandfather, Joseph Edward Evans. Keith Whitman

    1. [AROUACHI] Swartz-Carroll
    2. Jeanette, Thanks for your help. Please!!Take all the time you want to!! I just can't get my hands on his mother, Ann Elizabeth Carroll to save my life. I have a wedding license so I know she married Mr. Camp in 1871 but it is as if she does not exsist before James Henry was born. I found another Henry Swartz in Behastian township in the 1900 census for Ouachita Co. They lived next to William Webb who is Alice Swartz's father. But they also disappear after that. There is another Henry Swartz a generation earlier in Hempstead Co. who married India E. Rosenbaum in 1870 but I cannot connect them up to save my life. I have nothing on Henty Swartz's father and the same on his mother. Typical genealogy puzzle. Thanks, Carolyn Download the Lycos Browser at http://lycos.neoplanet.com

    1. [AROUACHI] Carroll family
    2. Can anyone there help me with the Carroll family? I believe my great grandmother to be Ann Elizabeth Carroll born 1836 in South Carolina. I don't know when she came to Arkansas or by what route. She married a man named Swartz, said to be a German, had a son, James Henry Swartz, born 1868 in Arkansas. In June 1871 she married a William W. Camp in Webster Parish, La. They are listed on the 1880 census for Ouachita Co. She had a daughter by him called Ida. Ida married William Pearce and lived in Ouachita Co. James Henry Swartz married Alice Webb and they both lived there until the 1920s. All oof their children are now dead and most of us grandchildren have almost no information. Ann Elizabeth Carroll Swartz Camp died in 1892 and is buried at Chidester. Even the smallest clue will be precious. Thank You. Carolyn J. Cunningham Download the Lycos Browser at http://lycos.neoplanet.com

    2. I guess I should have been more specific on my name look-up I requested for Greenwood Cemetery (or any for that matter). The man I am looking for - his whole name is Pharr Rushing Purifoy. It was thought that he was in the Purifoy Cemetery but the stone with his name is not there, then I heard he may be in Greenwood Cemetery. The name on the stone may be only P.R. Purifoy. The story is he was shot and killed in front of a store on California St. in Camden on Feb. 4, 1932. I am also interested in finding out information concerning the shooting - who shot him and why. Any information one might have would be greatly be appreciated by several of us who are researching the Purifoy family. Sorry about the mix-up and "Thank you" again for all of the help you have provided for us! Doris
