    3. Ray, Ok, you talked us into it. Jeanette says we're headed to Mt. Horeb this Sunday. I'm hunting up my sun blocker as we speak! I don't know if I'll find your Massey's, but I did find some old markers (concrete) that were not listed in the cemetery book. 3. Hi once again, Debbra: The reason I am asking is that my ggrandfather John Massey and his family lived in Frenchport starting c1845/1846. They came from Russel Co, AL c1845/1846. My prior research convinced me that he was John Massey, son of Elias Massey. A fellow person finally challenged me saying he was not my John Massey. I cannot even find where his family is buried around Frenchport. I have been looking for info in the cemetery info you have been sending out. My grandfather was William Jennings Massey who married my grandmother Ella Geneva McCraw of Falcon. I cannot even find my grandfathers gravae supposedly near Lewisville as they lived there until he died in 1894. Mt Horeb Cemetery is the only one I knew of that I had not canvased yet, so I am waiting on pins and needles. John Massey and family lived in northeast edge of Frenchport. I would be most happy for anyone who is descended from the Elias Massey of Lancaster, SC, to help me in the hunt. In 1830 Census he was in Stewart Co (from old Randolph Co, GA); in 1840 Census he was in Russell Co, AL; and in 1850 census in Frenchport, Ouachita Co, AR. Would appreciate any input from anyone caring. Believe it or not, my grandfather William Jennings Massey was born in 1826 in SC. Ray Mack Camarillo, CA born and raised in McKinney, Collin Co, TX. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Debbra Szymanski" <deb@arkansas.net> To: <AROUACHI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 12, 2002 11:28 AM Subject: Re: [AROUACHI] Mt Horeb Cemetery > Ray, > You flatterer! 3. Ray, You flatterer! About Mt. Horeb Cemetery.....I've been there and did about two hours of canvassing, but we had to leave because of the heat. It means I didn't even get half of the old section of the cemetery done. I like to start on the oldest part of the cemetery first. Normally it hasn't been a problem, we seek the shelter of a tree to take breaks. Unfortunately there isn't even a bush in Mt. Horeb Cemetery. And the ants........they are so bad, my husband thought I was dancing out there. The whole place is one giant ant bed! I plan to go back when the weather is cooler, I can wear some boots and find a bigger stick. I have information on his sons, one was my great grandfather, but I am trying to find his parents. They were born in Va. I found him on a 1850 census in Tenn and a 1880 census in Ark. My grandmother told us they had native american blood in that side of the family. She said they were in the trail of tears but that has never been proven.

    3. Larry, When you leave Camden going south on Highway 7 towards Louann, you will turn left on Ouachita 64 and travel about a mile. The cemetery will be on your right. Gates are accessible to the north and west sides. When you are on Highway 7, you can't miss the turn onto 64 there is a large white water tower that reads "Frenchport Water Association". I have three letters he sent trying to get a pension. I have sent for his civil war military records. I am trying to find his parents. His sons were Thomas W Martin, George Isaac Martin and daughter was Susan A Martin. They were in Ouachita County, Ark in 1880 census. Linda

    1. Re: [AROUACHI] Re: Sayre, Ouachita, Arkansas
    2. My grandparents were Jesse W. Hesterly and Martha Elizabeth Evans Hesterly. They lived in Sayre, AR from around 1900 until their deaths in 1973 and 1970 respectively. My Great Great Grandfather, James McEwing Douglas, Grandmother's grandfather, was postmaster at Sayre and also the mayor for awhile in the 1890's. Sayre was established around 1886 when the St. Louis and Iron Mountain Railroad, later the Missouri Pacific RR, built a branch line from Gurdon, AR down to Camden, AR. I remember asking my grandparents before they passed away who Sayre was named for, and they both said they didn' t know. As far as I know, there was no family named Sayre living in the area. It was my guess that Sayre was named for somebody involved with the railroad, or had some connection with the sawmill that was established in Sayre back in the 1890's. This is only a guess. If anyone has information that establishes who Sayre was named for, I would like to know, because it has been a mystery for years and years, and all the history of Ouachita County that I looked through has never given any clue towards solving this mystery. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/XV.2ADI/425.1 Message Board Post: There are Murphys from Ouachita, Hempstead and Nevada Counties AR in my family lineage as well. I grew up in Nevada County, so I'm very familiar with the region. Nevada County was formed in 1871 from portions of Ouachita, Hempstead and Columbia counties. The large Leake Plantation was located in the area that is now far southeastern Nevada County. Leake Store that you mention is shown on our township maps as located within Leake Township, which would have been a part of Ouachita County prior to 1871. It's not far at all from Smackover AR, which is still in Ouachita County. (Note: I have an ancestor that was overseer at the Leake Plantation in the mid-1800s, but he was a Barham rather than a Murphy). There may have been an Albany near Smackover and Leake Store, but it's also possible that the Albany your looking for is Albany Township, located in Nevada County. This Albany Township is just below Missouri Township & starts about four miles south of the town of Prescott (Nevada's countyseat). Albany would have been part of Hempstead County prior to 1871. My John W. Murphy came to southwestern AR in the 1840s from SC, AL & LA (and he's related to the Rev William Murphy clan of VA, NC, TN, MO). John Murphy's daughter Permelia Cecile Murphy married my ggg-grandfather James Cox in 1850 in Redland / Caruse Township in Hempstead County (later Nevada County). They lived for a time also just over the county line into Ouachita County near Camden at Red Hill where there were other Coxes. My Cox family still lives at Redland in Nevada County. Others from John Murphy's family lived at Boughton Township, just north of Prescott in Nevada County. It's my understanding that John had other Murphy relatives (brothers?) who lived also at this time near El Dorado and Smackover, which would possibly be the ones you're researching. I have a lot of the Murphy info stored in my files that I might be able to help you with later. Note that Ouachita (pronounced Wash-a-taw) is a very common word in southwest Arkansas and is the name of rivers, colleges, businesses, etc., as well as a county. It's obviously an old Indian word and is spelled with an O rather than a Q. I hope this much helps clarify some of your questions.

We have visited Sayre, PA - Sayre, AL and have another photo of him on Sayre Road in Washington D.C. area (VA- actually). There is also a Sayresville Road - Gallatin Co., KY that went by the farm of his great great grandfather James Harvey Sayre and Sarah G. "Sally" Holton. Lolley who filed and was granted a land patent in Camden, Ouachita Co, AR in 1911. He was born in Alabama around 1858/59. He is said to have died between 1911 & 1920 on an Indian reservation someplace between AR & OK. I do not know that he was Indian, (maybe half, and half Irish). He is listed in the 1900 Sebastian Co, AR census with wife Louisa Ann (Roy) Lolley. They have children Minnie, Mattie, and Henry. About 1903 he married Almira Ethel (Cripps) Ulrey, location unknown. He is listed on the 1910 Montgomery Co, AR census with wife Mira (Almira) Ethel and children Gilbert Stahl, Samuel Francis (my grandfather), and Jack. Samuel was born at Mena, Polk Co., AR. Jack died as a young boy someplace between OK, AR,MO, and IL. The last record I can find for Gilbert L. Lolley is the land patent record filed at Camden, AR. After his supposed death Almira moved herself and the boys to IL where she married a Bennett. Anyon! e who may have information on this family or suggestions on how to find more AR information, please contact me. Thank you for your time. Brenda

    1. [AROUACHI] Hi all! New to list, hope I can contribute...
    2. Nancy M. Dickinson
    3. I am new to the list, but thought I would join, as I am researching my husband's line, the Dickinson's from Dallas and Ouachita Counties. My first contribution to the illustrious Ouachita County is my husband's Great Grandfather's small amount of records from the Civil War... Alfred Harrison Dickinson, my husband's G Grandfather, joined Capt. Radford s Co., Grinsted's Regiment, Arkansas Infantry (later to become Co. C, 33rd AR Infantry) on 27 June 1862, in Camden, AR. On the 3rd of Jul 1862, he marched 7 miles to the camp and was mustered in. He was 25 years old and his brother, Lafayette M. Dickinson, also joined this same unit. He had another brother, Joel Shadrack Dickinson, that joined a Cavalry Unit. But I digress... Alfred was paid roughly 5 times during his 3 years in service, all by Capt. Gibbs (later Major) and Major Elliston. Alfred was enlisted in the Confederate Army by Col. H W McMillan (or W H McMillan) who was later a Lt. Col. Alfred enlisted in the Confederate Army for the term of "3 years or War"... Any of these names sound familiar? For those of you unfamiliar with the site, the National park Service has full rosters of most units of the CW and is updating them all the time. The site is http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/. Hope this helps someone... Nancy M. Dickinson OHGenWeb Webmaster Fayette County, OH http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohfayett

    1. [AROUACHI] Beavers in Missouri, Ouachita County, Arkansas (one more)
    2. Gary Warner
    3. My other problem with Melisssa Parthenia Beavers being the daughter of James G. Beavers and Nancy James WAS the census record. The only one I had was the 1860 Ouchita County census Missouri Township, which lists the following family: J.G. Beavers 45 M Ten Nancy 36 F Ten Wm J. 15 M Ten Mary F. 13 F Ten Margaret 10 F Ten John 8 M Ark Missouri 5 F Ark Marilda 2 F Ark Marrietta 3/12 F Ark But then I was finally able to get the 1870 census, and darn if it wasn't an "Initial" roll. The census taker didn't write out ANYONE's full name! Lazy good-for-nothing grumbledy grumbledy . . . but here is what I find: Ouachita County, Missouri Twshp, pg. 346 Beavers, J. G. 55 m (TN) N.A. 46 f (TN) M.J. 21 f (TN) M.C. 20 f (TN) John A. 18 m (AR) M.N. 15 f (AR) M.E. 12 f (AR) M.P. 10 f (AR) M.A. 7 f (AR) If we take "M.P." to be Melissa Parthenia, it would be possible that in the previous census she was still a babe in the womb. This would make her a respectable aged 23 when her som Millard Orestes Walthall was born Jan 31, 1883. What would be my next step on "proving" that "M.P." is Melissa Parthenia? Thanks for any help, Gary Warner (in Birmingham, AL)
