Have you looked in Calhoun County? I know the Attebery family moved to the Salem area after their land was taken for the Shumaker Plant in Camden during the war. I think they may have been living around the Woodberry Area. Most Calhoun County Cemeteries have been inventoried and can be found on either Calhoun County GenWeb Site or on the Arkansas Cemetery Site.

This came to be by a family cousin, who is most knowledgeable is history and Genealogy. He leads the head of my list for respect as a genealogist and can be found at <BEDSOLE-L@ROOTSWEB.COM>. He prints many many historical and family facts. The fact that a HILL and SMITH were named in this has a familiar ring of the HILL and SMITH connection of SE Arkansas. Since JD is in Alabama and alot of our people came from Georgia through Alabama, can there be a connection? Sweet A Case Of Discrimination How about this. A black man is accused of being black ??? .............JD [JBeds@aol.com] JOE H. SMITH, ATTORNEY, AS A COLORED MAN. Perhaps no more laughable incident ever occurred in the courts of this county than the case in which the attorney was charged by the opposite attorney of being a Colored Man and for that reason not allowed to testify in court. This was a case being tried before SAMUEL SHARPNACK of Clay Township, a justice of the peace. CAPTAIN WILLIAM HILL of Magnolia fame, appeared for the defendant and JOE H. SMITH for the plaintiff. When SMITH undertook to testify, himself, concerning a certain account book, he was at once objected to by CAPTAIN HILL on the grounds that section 2388 of the Code of 1851 read: But an Indian, Negro, mulatto or black person shall not be allowed to give evidence in any case wherein a white person is a party. "Now," remarked Captain HILL, "look at SMITH and determine if my objection is not well taken." The Court sustained the objection, whereupon a scene occurred in which books flew in the air and all was not tranquil, for the complexion of Attorney JOE H. SMITH was not unlike that of Gen. JOHN A. LOGAN, dark and swarthy, though he was a full-blooded Caucasian. It should be stated that this was just before the reconstruction acts of the United States, after the Civil War, and the state constitution had not voted and passed upon the rights of the Negro race, by Amendment No. 15, which allows a colored man the same rights as are accorded to his white brother.

Possibly so, Keith. When I did my quick search, however, I ran into quite a bit of genealogy on the Sayre family, much of it with links to Arkansas. Hmm. If it 'twere me, I think I'd check on the Sayre Family at Genforum. Someone there could have something... trapper -----Snip----- > Company, where it came from, and who it was named for. <PRE>Thanks for your comments. The Reader Mill was built after the Sayre Lumber Co. established a mill in Sayre. Reader is a mile down the railroad tracks from Sayre. I have the impression that the Sayre was established first, and that a lumber company, The Sayre Lumber Company, established a sawmill along the railroad tracks, and that a post office was established in Sayre to serve the growing town and mill workers. Then along came a man named Lee Reader who wanted to have the town named after himself. Why or when this happened is unknown, but apparently around 1895 the post office name was changed from Sayre to Reader, and then later it was changed back to Sayre. Lee Reader then established his sawmill a mile down the tracks from Sayre, and in time the mill grew larger than the Sayre mill, which eventually went out of business and shut down. However, my mother remembered that Sayre was considered more of a town throughout the 1920's. It had the railroad station and the post office, and Reader didn't. Sayre slowly declined, though, and the post office was closed and mail came out of Chidester. In the 1940's the railroad station was moved from Sayre to Reader, and I remember seeing it there in 1960. About 20 years ago the railroad station was moved to Fair Park in Hope, AR. I'm still pretty sure there is no family in Ouachita County named Sayre who gave the name to the town. If so, I'd be surprised. I still think the best bet is to find out the origin of the Sayre Lumber Company, where it came from, and who it was named for. There is a town in northern Pennsylvania, near the New York state line, named Sayre, and I believe that there was a lumber mill there. It may be possible that someone from Sayre, PA, who was involved in the lumber business there in the 1880's, decided to open a mill in South Arkansas, and started the Sayre Lumber Company, and named it after Sayre, PA. This is just a guess since I've come across no historical records saying one way or the other. Keith Whitman

(This page is a fascinating story of the Possum Trot Line (the Reader Railroad), which still operates today, I gather, with its 1907 wood-burning steam engine, for tourists.) And we find a mention of the Wallace burial plot in Sayre at this link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~arcemete/ouachita/ouachita.htm This, btw, is the Ouachita county, Arkansas, Cemeteries page of the Arkansas Cemeteries website at http://www.rootsweb.com/~arcemete/arcem.htm Here's a little geographic data from the "Places Named" website (I believe Places Named was covered in the second or third issue of The Electronic Genealogist...:>) Sayre, Arkansas, United States [Place] is in Ouachita County; location is 33°45'7"N 93°5'31"W; elevation is 206 feet [SourceGSP] I did NOT come up with any history on Sayre, however, other than the fact that it started as a post office. That being the case, I'd look for a family named Sayre near reading Mill prior to 1891. Sidney A. Gatlin, b.1852, daughter of Garrett and Anna O. Ryan Gatlin, married J. T. Henry, MD 1874 in Union County, AR, and lived in Quachita County after their marriage. In Goodspeed's Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Southern Arkansas 1890,s list their marriage, her membership of the Methodist Episcopal Church and that they have become the parents of eight children, one son and five daughters now living. Is anyone researching or have further infomation on this Henry or Gatlin family lines.
My cousin has a picture of Just DAVIS which, to the best of his memory, was given to him by someone at a family reunion a couple of years ago. Debbra: Just a few pictures of the general store, a few homes, a couple of shots where I calculated my grandfather's dland was, and a few small cemeteries I ran upon There is an old cemetery about 5 miles north of the general store in Frenchport, turn off a road with an old weather worn sign that points an arrow to the left labled with "cemetery'". Then there were two or three cemeteries to the south of the general store that I got overall pictures of. O saw the Mt Horeb Cemetery when leaving Frenchport and did not have any time to investigate. I have been wishing for one more trip back there.
