    1. [AROUACHI] Re: Hodges in Ouachita Co. Arkansas
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/XV.2ADI/6.138.1.1 Message Board Post: I've noted your postings about your Hodge family from SC & AL that came to Ouachita County AR about 1850. Did they live around the Red Hill / Chidester area? I've been studying my own Howard, Cox and Murphy lines that also came at this time from SC & AL to this region. They include Charlotte Howard (m: Josiah Frisby & buried at Bluff City in Ouachita Co.), James Cox (m: Permelia Melissa C. Murphy in 1850 in Missouri Twp in Ouachita Co.) and others. Due to similar circumstances of my lines and yours, I believe they likely arrived in AR together. If you have additional info that might support this theory, I'd love to discuss it with you! I've found that my three family branches were all connected to the what's been called the "Great Awakening" religious movement of the late 1700s and early 1800s. They were followers of some of the early Baptist and Methodist preachers that initiated many church elders and family groups to migrate together as "missionary church-planters" on the expanding frontier. My Murphys descend from the well-documented Reverend William Murphy of VA, NC, TN, MO. Around 1799-1805, one of his Murphy sons started Fairforest Baptist Church in Union Co./Greenville SC with a following that had moved there from Sandy Creek area of NC; another Murphy son took a group to Warren/ Barren Co. KY; and a third son went to St. Francois Co. MO. My Howards went with these Murphys to SC and later to KY, although Charlotte (my ggg-grandmother) ended up at Bluff City, AR. My direct Murphy came to AR from SC. My Coxes were in VA around 1790 and middle TN by 1812, then southwestern AR by 1830. I note that your ggg-gf's son was Alexander Campbell Hodge....were you aware that an earlier Alexander Campbell was a famous Baptist preacher of the early 1800s era? I see too that your Hodges were in NC prior to SC, so is it possible they were with the Murphys, Mulkeys, Howards, Gists, Breeds, Stearns, Bartons and others at Sandy Creek NC? Other names that ended up in this southwestern AR region that may also be connected to these folks include: Greer, Jones, Davis, Smith, Dillahunty, Best, Hart, Hall, Mulkey, Barham, McDaniel, Stone, Crabtree, Billingsley, Lane, etc. I would love to talk with you further about this. Note that I also grew up in Redland Township in Nevada County AR, which was originally in Ouachita County and is nearby to the Chidester, Bluff City & Red Hill area.

Believe it or not, I just saw this message almost a year after the fact. I had about given up on ever finding out my grandfather's parents. I came across them listed in the Ouachita County, AR census of 1880 by accident yesterday. I still live in Ouachita County, AR. By the time I read your message, I had found John W and Sarah E in the census, with my grandfather listed as their 10 month old son. I know he was born in 1879, so that fits. John W's birthplace (and his parents' birthplace) is listed as NC. I went to search for Elisha and Rhoda and found them listed in NC. But then the problems started! Too many Elisha's!! Do you know who Elisha's parents were? Are they Joshua and Mary Jane (Jones) of NC?? If so, then I have right line (direct descendants only, no siblings) traced back to Richard b.1600 in Fifeshire, Scotland d. 1630/46 in Jamestown, VA. I'd appreciate any help! Also, does anyone know Marsil's email? The one listed doesn't work and the one I have in ! my address book is also returned. I think now that I know it's the NC clan, I can get somewhere. I've been stumped by only knowing AR until yesterday!

I have photos of Marcus and his wife and Weedon and his entire family. Marcus and Weedon married Steelman sisters. The Steelman family lived a few doors done the road from the Colvert family in the 1880 Census. I have a photo of Weedon and Dock taken when they were old men (probably Dock's wife's funeral) that is one of the sweetest photos I have ever seen. These two old men -- you can feel the love between them just from their body language. If you can find a photo of George Lester b. 1868, that will be my thanks. When I write the book on Joseph Norman, I will let you buy a copy!

    2. David R. Oliver
    3. Doris, I don't have time right now, but we need to talk as I'm also related to this line. My grandmother was Viva McWilliams, daughter of George Anderson Mc Williams and Elizabeth Johnson Riding(s). Living with them on the 1880 or 1900 census is I can't make out the first name but the last name is Flores and the the relationship to George is mother-in-law. All my family is from Reader/Sayre and went to school with cousins whose last name is Florece. I think we are talking about the same family, just not sure what the connection is but it must be on the Elizabeth Johnson Riding side for me. I'll check with my mother and Aunts in Camden,Ar to see if they can help. I have determined since my last message that this Andrew apparently did go by the nickname of "Buck" Jones and is a cousin to my COX family in Nevada County AR. He also may have lived closeby to his cousin William Cox in Junction City AR / Union County by 1903. We also believe that Elsie NICHOLS, who married Nelson Cox in Ouachita County, is part of the same NICHOLS family that Buck Jones' wife Malinda NICHOLS Jones came from. We always understood that the Nichols were kin to the Coxes somehow prior to her marriage to Nelson Cox. We've just now figured that one out! If I find out more on the Nichols, I'll keep you email address and let you know and/or post it here on the Ouachita Co. site.
