Keith, Sounds like you have as much history on Sayre as anyone. Here's a little more information. I have a copy of an assignee's sale of the property of Oscar Rowley to satisfy his creditors. This sale took place April 14, 1896 at Sayre, a station on the Camden and El Dorado branch of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain, and Southern Railway. The sale lists the personal property of Oscar Rowley which included three narrow guage log cars, 350 bushels of corn, one bay mule named Frank, one brown mule named Jim, one two-horse wagon, 4,000 feet of iron pipe, one No. 4 Miller steam pump, one pile-driver hammer, and one boiler, engine, and driver for pile driving. There are handwritten notes on the copy I have which show A. C. Webb bought the two mules for $50.00 and there were no bids on the other personal property. The real estate part of the sale listed a long list of tracts of land in Nevada County and Clark County, with the reservation of the right-of-way of the tram road of Oscar Rowley running from Sayre into Nevada County. Many of these tracts of land have the note "no bid" written beside them and other tracts consisting of 40 acres have $1.00 or 50 cents written by them. That was probably the price per acre for land back then. I have a news item from 1891 that mentions that Oscar Rowley is moving rapidly with his tram road. He was probably building it at that time and I suppose got in debt and they had to sell his property in 1896. I'm sure this is the railroad shown on the 1900 map as the Sayre Lumber Co. Railroad. I have followed parts of that old railroad tram many times. When I was a kid, we would squirrel hunt and used the old tram as a landmark to keep from getting lost.

Lois: I would like to have a copy of your old school for posting at our new museum here in Camden Arkansas. Mr.Gerald Keith, is in charge of this project of getting pictures of all the old schools of Ouachita County. I will be happy to print it out for him if you will send me a copy. I know this will make him happy because he was wishing for a picture of the Sayre or Reader school just recently. He lives close by so I do lots of his scanning and making pictures on my computer for him to go into our museum. Thanks Bill Lusby 183 Southwood Dr. Camden, AR. 71701
We have a project going on here in Camden where we are trying to get pictures of all the old schools in Ouachita County. If you can send me a picture of the old school at Sayre I will print it out and give it to Gerald Keith, who is in charge of this "old school" project. He will post it in our museum at the old railroad station. Its been only a few weeks ago I heard him say that Sayre was one of the schools pictures he still had to find.. I'm sure he would appreciate this picture very much. Thanks. Bill Lusby
My family connects with Lydia Bell Lusby who married Jack Stewart Watson. Lydia Belle happens to be a half-sister of my father, Honor C. Lusby. Their father was Henry L. Lusby, who was one of the sons of James H. Lusby. Jack and Lydia are now living at Hot Springs, AR where she is in a nursing home and Jack is living at a retirement center..They have three children, Jackie Joy Watson Francis, Nancy Watson Baker, and Stewart Watson. I would certainly be interested in any information you might have. Thanks. Bill Lusby 183 Southwood Dr. Camden, Arkansas 71701
My family, the Douglas, Evans and Hesterly families, all lived in Sayre beginning around 1890 and I can tell you what I know about the town. One of the earliest settlers was Dr. Isaac Hawkins who built the old two story house in Sayre before the Civil War. Some say the house was used as a stage coach stop in the 1870's. It's my understanding the stage ran from Camden to Tate's Bluff to Red Hill and Sayre and then on to Prescott because that was the nearest railroad station to Camden from about 1876 to around 1882. Dr. Hawkins is buried to the east of the site of the old house, which was torn down in 1990, behind the old Spurlock house. The railroad came to Sayre around 1882 or so. Chidester seemed to become a town along the line first, and then around 1886 Sayre was established. The origin of the name is a mystery. I once asked my grandmother, Martha Elizabeth Evans Hesterly, who was born in Sayre in 1889, and lived there all of her life, how Sayre got its name and she didn't know. I once thought it was named for someone who was connected to the St. Louis and Iron Mountain RR, but I recently saw a map of the area around 1900, and it showed a spur railroad track running west from Sayre towards the crossroads area of Reader on the Nevada Ouachita County line, and it was identified as belonging to the Sayre Lumber Company. It's possible some investor from up north came down and started a lumber company in Sayre and named it after himself. This is just a guess. My Great Great Grandfather, James McEwing Douglas, was postmaster in Sayre for around 1894. He also was mayor for awhile. My Great Grandfather, Samuel Hamilton Summers Hesterly, postmaster in Sayre around 1915. The 1900 Census shows Sayre had quickly grown into a town of around 200 people, due to the employment at the Sayre Lumber Mill, which was located west of the Railroad Station. My mother said quite a few African Americans worked at the Mill and the area they lived in was called "Wage Town". I have a photograph of the store building in Sayre, taken around 1905. One part of the old wooden building with a covered porch was a grocery store, another part was the post office, and the east side of the building had a second story which was used as a Masonic Hall. Sayre had several churches, as well as the school, which my mother attended, as well as my Aunt. It taught grades 1 through 8. They attended in the 1920's. To go on to High School they had to go on to either Camden or Magnolia. The school was located on Campbell Hill Road, south of the Railroad Depot, about a half a mile. The Railroad Depot was on the south side of the tracks, and the store and post office building was on the north side of the tracks, just west of where Sayre Drive crosses where the Railroad tracks were. The Union Pacific Railroad tore up the tracks just recently, in 1999 or 2000. According to what I heard a man named Lee Reader came to Sayre and tried to get the town named after him. I don't know how he succeeded but the post office records do show that the name of the town switched back and forth between Sayre and Reader for a few years in the 1890's and early 1900's. Eventually the Reader Lumber Mill was established a mile northwest of Sayre, and that became the town of Reader. Sayre remained Sayre from that point on, and still had the Railroad Depot. My mother said the station at Reader was just a platform for years, no building. When the mill in Sayre closed, the town began to die as people moved away to find employment. The Mill in Reader was going strong and people moved there. That's how Reader came to grow larger than Sayre. The Mill eventually became owned by the Johnson Lumber Company, and later the Mansfield Lumber Company. They started the Reader Railroad which ran southwest from Reader, and hooked up with where the Sayre Lumber Company RR once ran at a place called Sayre Junction, and then continued southwest into Nevada County. Around 1929 or so the Mill in Reader closed and the Mansfield Lumber Company built a new mill down in Zwolle, LA. I met some people who moved from Reader to Zwolle so they wouldn't lose their jobs. In the 1940's the Railroad physically moved the Sayre Depot to Reader, one mile down the tracks, because Sayre's population had dropped to just a few families. In the 1970's the old Sayre Depot, which became the Reader Depot, was moved to Fair Park in Hope, AR. It is still there today, and is part of the Hope Watermelon Festival in August. My family always pronounced Sayre, Say - Ree. Once we visited Sayre, Pennsylvania, which is up near the New York State line around Elmira. My mother was amused that they pronounced the town Say-Er. I don't know if there is a connection how Sayre, OK and how Sayre, AR were named. We still own my grandfather's old home in Sayre, and still remember how my family came from Sayre, even though it has pretty much faded off the map. I hope this information helps.
My grandparents also lived in Sayre. My aunt in her 90's pronounces it as you said rhymes with Maybe. That is the only way I have ever heard it. I also have a Sayre school picture with my grandmother and her two sisters in it with a whole school group it seems in front of the school. My grandmother Allie Myrtle Moseley Floyd was born in 1892 and married Oscar Floyd in Sayre in 1909. I would love to see your photo and would gladly share mine. I also have another photo where my grandmother is a little older, looks to be the same teacher with 11 people in a group. I grew up at Redland Community, which is about 10 miles away, and I have a photo of the school at Sayre (probably about 1920). My grandfather, George Nelson Cox, was the schoolteacher at Sayre at the time and is in the photo with all his students. He taught in several of the small community schools during the 1920s & 30s. > > The schoolhouse appears to have been a large, two-story, wood-frame building in a wooded setting. We pronounce Sayre as two syllables ("say-ree"), rhyming with "maybe". Is that how you pronounce your surname? I don't know anything about an original person for whom the community was named, but I will ask my family and perhaps can have a later addition to this mystery. > > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >

Also any and all information on the community when it was called Sayre is of interest. I'm still anxious to find out for whom it was named. One theory is that it was named for the same person for whom Sayre, Oklahoma was named, yet the history of Sayre, Arkansas, seems to go back earlier. The pronounciation is also interesting. In my lifetime and with those that I know, it is pronounced "Sss-air" or "Say'-yerr." Back in the olden days, I think it sounded more like "Sears." That how a lot of our public records were written. Also, I learned several years ago that the town of Sayre, Alabama, gets pronounced "Say'-ree." You can e-mail me at sayrehouse@juno.com. Thanks, Ralph

She was born 22 SEPT 1919 and married Jack Stewart Watson in 1938. Jack's great-grandmother was Sarah Frances Heldebrand. Sarah's father was my great-grandfather Daniel Jefferson Heldebrand, who had 16 children, all raised in Union County & Ouachita County AR. Sarah married Young Eddie Watson in 1865. If this connects to you, I have lots more info.
