I have located an ancestor, Dennis Darta CRAIN, on the delinquent tax list of 1871 in the circuit court records of Newton Co., AR. This indicated that he had moved to Boone Co. The tax lists for 1871-1874 were on the same film, but nothing earlier. Are tax lists for 1866-1870 available for Newton Co., and, if so, have they been microfilmed? Failing that, does someone have access to the records themselves. I am trying to pin down when D. D. Crain came to Newton Co. from Williamson Co., IL. I now know that he left for Boone Co. after the census taker came through in 1870 (5 Sep) and the filing of the delinquent tax report (10 Mar 1871). I can probably pin this down a bit more based on when they collected the taxes in Jasper in 1871 and suppose that it would have been about the same time in 1870. He was on the Williamson Co., IL census report for 1860 and served in a Civil War unit until spring of 1862. I don't know whether he moved to AR shortly after his second marriage in 1863 (sold land in IL 24 Aug 1863) or waited a few years. He married Mahala (WHITE) EOFF, widow of Isaac A. Eoff and Dennis' third wife, in 1870 in Boone Co., AR. Any suggestions or helps will be welcome. -- John R. Porter j.porter@usip.edu http://www.usip.edu/chemistry/faculty/porter.htm
