Nathaniel Smith Sr. was son of Alfred Smith and Rebecca Flood Smith. Mary Ellen Pierce was daughter of Charlotte Pierce, the first wife of James Pierce. Nathaniel and Mary Ellen Pierce had the following children: (1) Thomas Smith, born 1882 who married Donna Massengale. He had three sons: Elmer, Ernie and Renie. Thomas died near Coalgate, OK. (2) Emanuel "Jerry" Smith born 1884 who was adopted by John Kink Flud and moved to Oklahoma. He possibly married Lassie Dabbs. (3)William A Smith, born 1886. Adopted by John & Tony Pierce Barnes. Died after 1900. Supposed to have gone to Missouri. (4) Rebecca Sarah Annie Smith, born 1887. She married Simon Newton Eddings. (5) Martha Flora Jane Smith, born 1890. She married K. Gilmore. Several Gilmore children still live in California. (6) Nathaniel Smith Jr., born 1892. Married Canzada Elizabeth"Betty" Eddings. They had nine children. Mary Ellen Pierce died 23 Nov 1892 from complications of childbirth a few days after Nathan Jr. was born. Neighbors went to check on her and she was dead...had bled to death. Daughters Martha and Sarah were in the house with her. 1900 Newton Co. AR. census shows these children living with different families....adopted by several. Nathaniel Smith Sr. died 27 July 1891 and is buried in Coppers Bluff Cemetery, Newton Co. AR. He supposedly died from eating green apples.
