    1. [ARNEWTON] Davis/Cecil Families
    2. John Cecil was the first elected Sheriff of Newton County. During the Civil War, he split with his brothers and became a Confederate Raider of some note. I very much enjoyed reading "One Small Drum," which was about John and many of the Newton County Families of that era. I note that at the end of this book (By Billie Touchstone Hardaway), John Cecil decides to wed Mary Davis and move over to Madison County. In fact, John and Mary had been wed for many years before the war. John wed Mary Davis (b. ca 1825), and they lived together for many years after the war. Does anybody know anyting about a Davis family in Newton County? I've totally dead ended on this search for her. She was my great great grandmother. Plus--is John Cecil the only Sheriff of Newton County for whom no photograph exists? Somebody told me that at one time---claimed that the capital city of Jasper was burned down because of him--so maybe there is no photo! Thanks much. Penny (Cecil) Bloodhart
