Richard, The first 22 or so pages of the early Newton County, Arkansas marriages are missing. The Index is intact and shows: Jas. H COUCH married Mellissa J HENSLEY , Book A, page 7. There is no date listed, but this would be in the time frame of 1866-1867. Per the Index on Arkansas Union Soldiers (Civil War) James H Couch enlisted in Co.E, Second Arkansas Infantry (Union) on 28Oct1863 at Jasper, Arkansas. He was 18 years of age but does not list place of birth. He applied for his Civil War Union Pension in 1888. The Civil War Union Pension book shows that he died 20 June 1916 but does not list his place of death. Have you sent for his Civil War Military and Pension record? The Complete Pension record would probably give his birthdate, birthplace, marriage date; wife's maiden name and her other marriages (if any) and a list of the living children, with their birthdates and his death date and place of death. You can obtain the necessary forms for ordering these records by writing to: <inquire@nara.gov> ask for NATF Form 80 (Civil War Pension) and NATF Form 86 (Military Service Record). When you receive the forms, fill in the blanks with the name, state he served from, the Unit, Civil War, etc. And be patient......the Government takes a long time in sending you the forms and once you send in the forms, months sometimes go by before you get your answer. But worth the wait. I have found that sending for Civil War records is one of the best ways to find out family information for that time period. Evelyn RKinfolks@aol.com
