    3. Sidelight on Lewis Feltnor--His family name was Felkner but he didn't learn to read or write until he came to work for the Robinson family. Mrs. Robinson taught him to read and write. He found a "k" hard to write so he wrote his name Feltnor. Also, sometimes he spelled his first name "Lewis" and sometimes "Louis". I have pictures of both him and Lodoiska (also found spelled many ways--but the family called her "Lowdusky". Their daughter, Adaline, is my great-grandmother. She married James Henry King. Lewis was born in Eastern Tennessee and moved west to make his fortune. Later, during the Civil War, he hid out in the mountains in Newton County to avoid the Confederate draft--couple of reasons--1) he had a bunch of little kids to feed, 2) he didn't believe in slavery (much of eastern TN didn't). Lodoiska was reknowned for her photographic memory--which in varying degrees has been passed down--although not as strong as she had. Adaline, their daughter, told stories about and could sing the songs that the Yankee soldiers sang when they marched through Limestone Valley in Newton County. Their home was still partially standing 30 years ago when I was a kid. And their later home in Johnson County is still partially standing.
