Hello Bill, Per the Civil War Union Soldiers Index, Capt John McCoy, age 43, was born in Hawkins Co.TN in 1820. He enlisted in Co. F, First Arkansas Infantry on 10 March 1863 in Newton Co.AR. John McCoy later moved to Christian Co.MO. Found him on the 1870 census with wife Elizabeth (Jones?) and children John J, George W, Mary F, Andrew J, Margaret J and Rebecca C McCoy. His daughter Martha Ellen and husband Samuel Issac Workman lived close by in Linn Township, Visit 58. Capt John McCoy died in Missouri but cannot find my record at the present time of the cemetery he is buried in. He is not listed in the Arkansas Union Soldiers Pension Book Index. Referring to your ancestor: William R Seaboalt, age 36, born Kentucky, enlisted in Co. F, First Arkansas Infantry(Union) on 10 June 1863 at Springfield, MO. William R Seaboalt applied for invalid pension in 1892. William is not listed in the death date and place index in the Union Soldiers Pension Index. If you have not sent for his COMPLETE Civil War Pension file, I urge you to do so. The complete file costs $37 at the present time and contains so much more than the regular file. They usually contain the wife's maiden name, place and date of marriage, and a list of the childrens names. Also where he lived since his discharge from the Service; if he were wounded; physical exams by doctors to prove his disability, and much more. And, of course, affidavits by men who served with him in the Service. There was also a William A Seabolt, age 27, born in McMinn Co.TN who enlisted in Co. C, Third Arkansas Cavalry(Union) on 25 Oct 1863 in Perry Co.AR. This William Seabolt's widow signed for his Civil War Pension in 1890. You can send for your Union Civil War Military and Pension records by sending a request to the NARA(National Archives). Go to their website: National Archives For you Civil War buffs, there is a web site for the Official Records of the War of Rebellion (Civil War) wherein you can read about many things pertaining to the Civil War. The War of the Rebellion in Cornell University's Making of America Evelyn Flood Rkinfolks@aol.com

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xV.2ADE/516.1.1.1 Message Board Post: You know, I was born in 1934 and my gg-grandfather who served under Capt McCoy died in 1905. His son, Stephen, was my g-grandfather and he died when I was 10 years old. He told me lots of stories about his youth in Arkansas but did not talk about the Civil War. I beleive the fact that this Seaboalt family from Newton County who had fought for the Union side had moved into an area in Texas which was a hot-bed of the Confederacy, even when I was a youth, so discretion became the better part of valor in this situation. I first learned of William Riley Seaboalt's service in the Civil War in the early 1980's from Walter Lackey's "History on Newton County". But I did not realize that this service was on the Union side until I found his name in the 1891 Census of Civil War veterans. I had copies of his muster/pay records and his application and affidavites from Newton County acquaintences in support of his Civil War Pension application which he finally received about 5 years! before he died. Some of other men who served in the McCoy company submitted affidavites (Lemuel R. Jones, Archibald Reynolds, Cooper, etc.) Although I am in possession of the estate papers of William Riley Seaboalt, there is no photographs or any other references to his Civil War service. William

The last known I have is James Baucom, father of James Frank Baucom, b. 1/24/1891 and died 1/9/1921, which was father of my grandfather, Carl Conley Baucom, b. 9/29/1920. All I know is that James Frank Baucom lived in McCurtain County, Ok when he was wrongfully arrested and died in jail of an unknown epidemic. Since your family was in Arkansas, moved to OK, this may be related. Any information you have is great.

    1. [ARNEWTON] Davis/Cecil Families
    2. John Cecil was the first elected Sheriff of Newton County. During the Civil War, he split with his brothers and became a Confederate Raider of some note. I very much enjoyed reading "One Small Drum," which was about John and many of the Newton County Families of that era. I note that at the end of this book (By Billie Touchstone Hardaway), John Cecil decides to wed Mary Davis and move over to Madison County. In fact, John and Mary had been wed for many years before the war. John wed Mary Davis (b. ca 1825), and they lived together for many years after the war. Does anybody know anyting about a Davis family in Newton County? I've totally dead ended on this search for her. She was my great great grandmother. Plus--is John Cecil the only Sheriff of Newton County for whom no photograph exists? Somebody told me that at one time---claimed that the capital city of Jasper was burned down because of him--so maybe there is no photo! Thanks much. Penny (Cecil) Bloodhart
