I hope you are still researching. In my search for the ancestry lines of my mother's family (Ethel Aline James), I have come across some very interesting information concerning the Davis'. My mother's father was Paul Dewey James b. Jul. 20, 1988, married to Mary Susan Davis. Her parents were Zachariah Taylor Davis b. Apr. 15, 1848 and Sarah Jane Cossart b. Nov 3, 1855. Zachariah had a brother named John Perry Davis (alias John Davis, John P. Davis, J. P. Davis). John served in the Newton's 10th Arkansas Cavalry Company C from the fall of 1863 until the end of hostilities. Now, I think John Perry Davis had a daughter named Mahala (Martha) Davis. And, the information goes back to include the Murphy's, Thomas', Perry's, Yarbrough's, Miller's, Eason's, and May's. I hope this helps. If you know anymore about Mahala, etc. please let me know. Thanks, Rev. John Suskey
Can anyone tell me if there are any Ramey's or Wheeler's in the book called "New Ozark Cousins"? I would like to order it if they are. Are these families found in any other book about Newton Co.? Anne Renshaw >According to Bud Phillips in his book "New Ozark Cousins", David Martin Meadows who married Rosey Smith and Thomas Benton Meadows who married Adeline Dial were brothers and children of Williamson T. "Bill" Meadows and Adlisia J. Buck. This Bill Meadows was the son of Williamson M. "Jack" Meadows and his wife Lydia (Unknown),who was the son of Jacob M. Meadows 1793 and Jane W. Harmon, who was from Greenville Co. North Carolina. Bud Phillips was a school teacher who taught all over northwest part of Arkansas and knew many of these families. Mr. Phillips quoted Benton Meadows as saying his grandfather (Jack) lived in the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee and was killed in or during the times of the Civil War. Part of the family settled in Crawford County, Arkansas. David Martin and Thomas Benton settled at Treat, Pope County, Arkansas. This is in the very northwest corner of the county and parts of the community are actually in Johnson County. Both of these men are listed in t! >he 1900 Johnson County census. Williamson M. and Adlisia J. Meadows are buried in Shannon Cemetery in Pope County at Treat along with Thomas Benton and several of his family, including Rachel Owen Dial. Thomas Benton Meadows sons, Willie J. married my husband's great aunt, Lether Ruth Boyd, so we do have more information on this family. >Lina Boyd linajaneboyd@hotmail.com >

Burl and Elizabeth Busby are both buried in Carver Cemetary as are Louis and Nancy. Welles Cemetary is at the mouth of Welles Creek and Carver is on the Buffalo River near where Big Creek runs into it. It is easy to find, if any of y'all are in Newton County. There are a lot of the Busby and Farmer families buried in the Carver Cemetary. Louis and Nancy's daughter, Eva, is buried there. Margaret Elizabeth, my grandmother, is buried in the Jasper cemetary with my grandfather. I'll get busy on the photos.

Garrett Rhynes served in Co. E, Sixth Kentucky Cavalry in Civil War. Perhaps he had a Civil War Pension? Have you thought about sending for his Complete Pension? I find the Civil War Pension records a treasure trove of accurate genealogy information. The Rhynes families were living in Pleasant Hill Township, 1900 Newton County, Arkansas census. Garrett, Letcher , Lelender B and William T Rhynes are all listed. Evelyn Flood Rkinfolks@aol.com

Reserve your copy of "The New Ozark Cousins" by V. N. "Bud" Phillips. The Newton County Historical Society has made arrangements with the author to reprint this excellent resource for family historians. We are keeping the original 1984 text of this 361 page book which includes information on over 110 Ozark families. Thanks to Bruce Peoples, we also are including a complete name index. Pre-publication cost is $22.50 post-paid. Order by JULY 15, 2002. If a minimum of fifty orders are not received by this date, the publication will be canceled, and the money refunded. In a message dated 5/26/02 2:05:59 AM Pacific Daylight Time, RKinfolks@aol.com writes: There is an 1911 Biographical Sketch available on many Confederate Veterans. It is called Arkansas 1911 Census of Confederate Veterans. Believe you can obtain a copy of needed sketch by writing to Arkansas History Commission One Capitol Mall Little Rock, AR 72201 (they have website and you may be able to possibly order this from them). OR LDS (Mormon)Fische 6,019,335 can be ordered from your nearest LDS (Mormon)Family History Library. This fische shows many soldiers names who applied for CSA Pensions. In the sketches I have seen, the man's name is listed, wife's name, childrens names and a little about the claimant's mother and father and where he was born. Cost was 15 cents but may be a little higher now. The fische stays in the library for others to use. This fische is probably in most LDS Family History Libraries. There used to be a website of Confederate Veterans where one could ask for a lookup of this 1911 Arkansas Confederate Veteran Census, but have been unable to locate the website lately. Perhaps someone reading this could provide the website. Evelyn Flood Rkinfolks@aol.com
