In another branch of our family, a distant cousin entered the armed forces as having Native American ancestry. Unfortunately, the Indian woman of the same name as his mother, on the Indian rolls, was six years younger than his mother! I have seen no evidence so far that either Nancy Prichard or Henry Carter had Indian ancestry.

My family is a perfect example. We are just now finding out the possible connections in my father's family. We were always told that we were descended from Irish and French. When we asked further questions we were told that we didn't need to know and we didn't want to know. I am finding that this is a very prevelant answer in those whose indian ancestry was hidden. I am not saying that this makes our family story true, but Phil and I were both given the same story.--That Grandma Busby was Indian. I don't know if it is true or not, but I do know that early families in North Arkansas carefully hid this ancestry.

There were many "Black Dutch" living in Oklahoma, a common term used by mixed bloods, but many others were proud of their heritage, and no matter whether it was revealed or hidden, someone always knew it.

It was most definately not popular to be connected to the indian tribes. So maybe that old family story is right. I also was told that Grandma Busby was indian.

Your dad was a really nice man. I had also heard that Grandma Busby was Indian. I have no proof. She looks very indian in the photos. We have a mutual cousin whom I believe has done research on this line. Do you know Aunty Nellie's son, Jimmy? His wife had done the research. I will try to contact them. I only have contact through Dad. In the Parker line, your ggrandmother and my grandmother, Dora Garner was the one who told me that Grandma Parker was full blood Choctaw, but she would not talk very much about the family. All we ever got from her was the past is dead. Let it alone. We'll keep digging. Eventually we'll find some of the answers. On my Garner side, I have been told we are Cherokee, but I can not find any evidence of it. Are you into the Mayberry line yet? If so, let me know. I do have a great deal on this line and am in contact with a researcher in west Texas who has also done some great research. Great to hear from you , Phil. My father is Abb Garner, Margie's half-brother. Carolyn

She definitely is not full blood Choctaw. Henry Carter was English. I do not know Nancy Prichard's ancestry. I know that none of Nancy's siblings claimed to be full blood Choctaw, which would seem to point to the fact she was not either.

Anne, I do not have the book you inquired about, but I have some information on Tom Ramey and Ishaw Wheeler about 1875-1900(??). My gr-gr-grandfather, Charles H. Bethany, was a neighbor and had some business dealings with them. I have copies of some documents and I think I have pictures of their headstones. I don't have it handy at the moment, but if these are some of the ones you are looking for let me know and I will dig it out. Have a good day, Jean Cloke
Thanks to everyone who responded to my query about the Ramey's and Wheeler's. Are there any other Newton Co. Histories beside the New Ozark Cousins and the history written by Lackey? Was there an "Old Ozark Cousins"? Thanks again for the help. Anne

My father is Burl Thomas Farmer. I have info also that on the Farmer/Busby side, Nancy Jane Wright-Carter was full Choctaw, her daughter, Elizabeth Carter (1/2 Choctaw) married Burrell Busby, their daughter Nancy Jane Busby (1/4 Choctaw) married Louis Napoleon Farmer....this is why I have been tracing the Carter/Busby line back looking for more info...if all this is correct, we have Choctaw from both sides converging. On that side, two generations back, the Matriarch, Nancy Jane Prichard, was full Choctaw....that I received from my father's sister, Deloris Smith. Do you know how to contact Andrea Ramsey - I believe she gave me the latest info on that side of the family - you had an email thread going with her as well. Thank you so much - I am committed to finding our complete tree... Phil Farmer

Without knowing who you are and where you figure in, it's kinda hard to fill you in. I am assuming that you are Margie Mayberry and Burl Farmer's grandson. If so, here it is. Family stories have it that Margie's ggrandmother was a full-blood Choctaw. Margie's mother was Dora Collins. Dora's mother was Sarah Parker. Dora's grandmother was Sac Parker and she is supposed to have been the Choctaw in the family. I have no proof yet. In the Farmer and Busby, I don't know. My information on that side is sketchy. Will let you know when I get the pics posted.
