How might I bribe you into forwarding info from Joan? And, which of the cousins do you reference here regarding the Oklahoma land grant? I'm not keen on the land - just the Native American proof positive. You've gotten me energized to start looking hard again...:)

Her mother is buried at the Carver Cemetary in Newton County. Burl's family came from Tennessee. And, yes, I do have some information on them. I have a cousin that has done more research than I have and has lots more information. Contact me at my e-mail address. smokeyjoe77868@yahoo.com. Two of Burl's ggrandaughters are still living and there are a whole slew of gggrandchildren. Also, we were always told that Elizabeth was either Cherokee or Choctaw. My cousin tells me that one of her daughters proved up and was granted land in Oklahoma. Joan is now searching for those papers. Also, how are you related to this family?

Hello Delores, Have written to you before about the Burdine families. Thomas Shatswell divorced Canzada Burdine early after their marriage in Newton Co. AR. (they married in 1868). The divorce is in the Newton County, AR. records. Cannot give you the date as my Burdine files are not available (in storage). Do not know what happened to Canzada Burdine Shatswell. The tale in Newton County, AR is that William Burdine's wife was a Vesterman. William Burdine died ca 1866 and is buried in Smith Cemetery (Newton Co., AR)without a marker. William's son Nathaniel Burdine married (1)Sarah Jane Pierce and (2) Emeline Peoples. Nathaniel died in 1924 and is also buried in Smith Cemetery. Have Nathaniel's Civil War Pension record. The early Illinois marriages are on-line. You will find some of the Winchester names you have listed in these marriages. http://cyberdriveillinois.com/cgi-bin/archives/marriage.s Evelyn Flood Rkinfolks@aol.com Genealogy Memo-ra-bil-ia

William is born in 1809 KY. He has ELIZABETH b. 1810 NC. as his wife and the following children in his household: Thomas b. 1830 MO. Angeline b. 1834 MO. Harriett b. 1835 MO. Frank b. 1838 MO. Phoebe b. 1838 MO. Nathaniel b. 1841 MO. Kanazada b. 1848 MO. Angeline is found in another houshold with her sister Mary Violet Winchester Ingall (b. 1818 TN.) listed as Angeline Winchester. The Ingalls live just 5 households from the Burdines. Another sister is Elizabeth Jane Winchester Carey b. 1834 MO. lives just 1 household from the Burdine family. Elizabeth Jane is my GGgrandmother. Harriett is a Winchester according to the IL marriage registery. Harriett married a Riley. Thomas moves to Newton Co. with William and Nathaniel and Kanazada. Nathaniel m. Pierce. I think this Kanazada is found as Cansadia Burdyne 1868 Newton AK m to Thomas Shotswell. Thomas m. Rachel Asher later has a son James Perry Winchester I feel that the Burdine family found in Calhoun Co. is a combined family....I think Elizabeth is the mother to the Winchester children. Elizabeth Jane stated on census that both parents were born in NC. Please contact me with your thoughts. Thanks, Dolores

I believe that Willie and Floyd and Rosemary were siblings. Floyd apparently married Virginia McKinney who must have been Indian....probably Cherokee. I was born in Clarksville, Arkansas. My Curtis grandmother spent some time in Oklahoma when she was a child because her father was homesteading. He drank from a Cistern and then died from Typhoid at the age of 29. I also heard that Rosemary was sent to an orphanage right after her mother, Florence, died. (I am in touch with several Nichols descendants who tell me these things and send me some documents.) Why would she be sent to Shawnee, Oklahoma, all the way from Newton County, Arkansas? Why, when she still had a father and siblings? Florence and David had no Indian blood as far as I know. I have photographs of Sarah Caroline Nichols and also of another brother, John B. Nichols. No indian blood there. I also have a photograph of Sarah Norris, sister of Florence. No Indian blood there either. Did Rosemary have a different parent? Ask your father if he knows what happened to James Nichols (father of David Crockett Nichols) Was he bushwacked in Galena Missouri at the end of the Civil War? Best, Laura

I am a little confused about the Indian part. Who is Willie Ocolla Nichols? son of Floyd and Virginia? and is Rosemary his sister? I was told she was raised in an orphange in Shawnee but the stories are not consistent. I will talk more to my dad-Rosemary was his grandmother. All this is so interesting I will tell you later why I need to find Indian blood in our families. Also what is funny I was told we were Cherokee. Was Virginia full blooded or where did it start? I live in Edmond,OK Where are you from? Thanks for everything, Karrie
