Hi all, I have hit the proverbial brick wall with this one. Mr. __?__ RIGGS was born at an unknown date, supposedly in Indiana, and died about 1859 in Jefferson Twp., Carroll County, Arkansas, now Boone County. He married MAHALA __?__ before 1841 in Indiana or Missouri. Mahala was born about 1825-1826 in Indiana; d: 1/19/1877 Newton County, Arkansas. Her parents are unknown. Mahala and Mr. Riggs had to have moved to Missouri, perhaps Taney County, from Indiana by 1841 when their first son was born. They moved from Missouri to Carroll County by about 1854 when sixth child was born. Mr. Riggs died before the 1860 census was taken in Carroll County, where we first found her. We found Mahala in 1870 in the Newton County Census where she is listed as a widow with the following children. i. JAMES A. RIGGS, born 1841 in Missouri; died 3/13/1866 in Wilcoxon, Newton County, Arkansas, died from wound inflicted during Civil War. He married NANCY A. HARP 8/24/1862 in Newton County, Arkansas. ii. BENJAMIN F. RIGGS, born Abt 1843 in Missouri, possibly Tany County; died 9/15/1864 in Newton County, Arkansas, killed in action in Civil War. iii. ROBERT RIGGS, born 1845-1847 in Missouri, possibly Stone County; died Unknown. He survived serving in the Civil War. iv. JANE RIGGS, born 1850 in Missouri; died Unknown in Newton County, Arkansas ?. She married JOHN SKAGGS 9/11/1868 in Newton County, Arkansas. v. THOMAS BENTON RIGGS, born 3/17/1852 in Missouri; died 3/19/1927 in Newton County, Arkansas. He married GRACIE JANE ARMSTRONG 3/08/1875 in Newton County, Arkansas. vi. WILLIAM RIGGS, born Abt 1854 in Arkansas, possibly Carroll County; died in Newton County, Arkansas ?. He married MALINDA McGOWEN 2/15/1877 in Newton, Newton County, Arkansas. vii. GEORGE RIGGS born 1855-1856 in Arkansas, possibly Carroll County. Nothing else is known about him. viii. NANCY ANN RIGGS, born 2/07/1860 in Mt. Pleasant, Jefferson Township, Carroll County, AR; died 3/20/1943 in Newton County, Arkansas. She married ALLEN T. TENNISON 12/24/1877 in Newton County,Arkansas. Mr. and Mahala Riggs are my great-great grandparents, mother of my great grandmother, # 8 above, Nancy Ann Riggs Tennison. We have been searching for clues as to his first name and her last name and any other information we can find. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much. Charlene Holland char@presys.com
Hi! Time to repost this!! I have been looking long and hard for my "lost" Davis, and a James no less. James was born in North Carolina. I don't know the county. He married Nancy FRY and they had the children listed below. He died between 1845-1860 I believe. Nancy Davis then moved to Newton County, AR where I found her in the 1860 census. Her daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Davis married ABSALOM C. PHILLIPS in 1864, during the Civil War. They were my great grandparents. My grandparents were ROSCOE CONKLIN and ANGIE (TENNISON) PHILLIPS of Newton County, AR. If you have any information on these families I would appreciate hearing from you. Glad to share what I have on them so far. Thanks so much. Charlene 1 JAMES DAVIS b: Abt 1800 NC d: 1845-1860 NC. Trying to keep your vacation plans updated. Kathy
Hi all! I am now back from vacation to Arkansas and Oklahoma and am ready to do census lookups again for Newton County in the years 1850-1880. We got to visit several cemeteries in both Newton and Scott County, and saw many places I had visited as a child. Took lots of pictures and thouraghly enjoyed ourselves. Dinah at the Newton County Historical Society was great, as were the people at the Newton County Courthouse in Jasper. I was very empressed with the courtesy and the genuine kindness of all the people we met and all of the places we visited or shopped at. Have a great story to tell!! I had been corresponding with Winona Wilkenson of Houston for a couple of months and on the morning we visited the Newton County Courthouse she and her husband were there too!! What a nice surprise that was. Charlene
Charlene. Glad to know you had an enjoyable time!! It is nice to hear your comments on the area as I know people don't believe my statement on the website "everyone within the county remembers their Southern hospitality." on the history of Newton Co. Did anyone tell you where to go to view the elk (either early morning or late evening) grazing? Hope every one in Ok was just as gracious. Welcome back! Kathy
I have tried posting to several different sites over the past year and have not had a response. I am in hopes maybe some of you will know someone researching these families. I have been given items at the Genealogy Shoppe that belongs to families that were placed in auctions. I desparately want to see these items get into the hands of families with interest in the lines. As there is a Bible, photos, family documents etc. If you or someone you know are researching these lines PLEASE contact me. You will of course have to answer some questions in order that I know that I am placing them to the correct family. But these are who I am looking for: 1. Mrs. Minnie Garrett, lived in El Reno, Ok at one point. Family is of Native American descent. Had many honors and citations given her. 2. Mary Auton, Leo Imhausen. Surnames: Wootham, Gibbons, Zies (or Zier), Licklyter, Troutwine. Many of these photos are of the military. So you will need to inform me where the person was from, stationed, the war etc. Thank you for your help!!! Kathy
I have posted Sevier Co, Ar. 1842 Tax List http://www.rootsweb.com/~arsevier/index.htm <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~arsevier/index.htm">GENEALOGY: Sevier County, Arkansas</A> It will be several weeks before I get the 1845 Tax Records Posted. Good Luck in your search! Kathy
I have finally gotten the cemeteries I worked on my last trip to Ar. posted for Howard Co. They are: Athens, Center Point (African American), County Line, Fellowship, Green Plains, Old Union, Polk & Saline. I have questions to Old Union Cemetery and if you can answer them - please email me. There is a grave listed only as Minor, A Black Man - do you know who this man might be? Also, there is a Rosco T Dagenhart - no dates except on the time capsule - do you know the dates of his death - very strange to go to such an elaborate grave and not have the dates placed. http://www.rootsweb.com/~arhoward/index.htm <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~arhoward/">Howard County Arkansas</A> Good Luck in Your Search!!
