Thank you to everyone who replied and gave me directions to Aurora, AR! Newton CO, AR has the most wonderful people on its list! I'd never heard of the town; it wasn't on my map, but in 1897 the Grand Army of the Republic had a main quarters there. Knowing it was in Madison CO, AR will give me a place to begin searching. Again, THANK YOU Newton CO List Members! Bevelye Ballinger Riggs bevelye@onenet.net BTW: My surnames in Newton CO: Clayborn / Hyatt / Ballinger / Sumpter
Jonelle, and others interested, the BLM site is terrific, but there's more information available than just the final document. Ask your local librarian for a form NATF84, which is a National Archives Order for Copies of Land Entry Files. Follow the instructions carefully and in a few weeks, you will receive papers from your ancestor's applicatioin file, which resulted in him or her getting the document you see on the BLM page. There is often valuable genealogical data in these files. Terri Walker
Does anyone know where Aurora, AR is? It was listed on my g-ggrandfather's (John Clayborn's) military paper in 1897. He lived in Newton CO, AR. Thanks. Bevelye Ballinger Riggs bevelye@onenet.net

Diana that did work at the museum in Jasper told me on one of my visits, they (or she) was working on an index. But Diana does not work there anymore and I am not sure if the project is still in progress. I will try to find out on my next visit there.Other than that there is no known index. I hope everyone had happy and safe holidays. This year is now coming to a close and I have been working to have the website ready for the new year. The queries that are posted on the View New Queries page will be posted for the 1999 Queries and Surnames. The ones received this past year will be archived in the 1998 Queries and Surnames. If anyone would like to have any additional pages made for the website please contact me and I will get the page done. Or if you would like any changes made to the site - my ears are always open. I made a request asking for volunteers to help with gathering census records for the website. So far I am sorry to say only one person has offered to help me with one of my counties. I personally am still working on the 1850 census for Sevier (which would included Howard Co) and Newton Co., Ar. and being helped with the 1850 census for Morgan Co., Al. Slow process but getting there. I also have cemetery information that I am still working on trying to get posted that I and 3 others helped to gathered last summer. With only one or two people working to get this information it will be very slow. But if several of us work together imagine what we can get done! This is your website - as I have told you without you it would not be a success. And you have all worked hard to make it successful! I asked a few weeks ago to consider making a donation to Rootsweb. I appreciate all those that have said they would help to make it possible to keep the site running at no charge. I did have several make a comment that they had been told on other lists that it was expected. I do not want anyone to feel that it is manditory. It is your descision. As we all know there will be many newcomers to the list. Santa made several deliveries of new computers. Remember we were all new - noticed I didn't use the word I hate newbies - at one time. So if someone does not post something you feel proper please do not take it out on them because you have had a bad day. They will learn the ettiquette of mailing lists soon. And you never know this may be the person that has the information that you have searched for many years. You all read in the welcome email when you subscribed to this list that I will NOT tollerate rude behavior or flaming. I have been proud of my lists and have not had this problem but have already seen it on other lists. Thank you for being the mature, generous and helpful people you have been. I really hate to bring this up but I don't want one bad apple to spoil the whole bunch. I have been contacted that on one of my websites a professional genealogist is gathering information from contacts on the queries and selling it to their customers. Now I am sure there is more than this one. I just want to remind you that when you share something the only obligation they have when they publish a book is to state who they obtained the info from. Now if the genealogist is providing the info without acknowledging where it came from, then the genealogist is violating copyright laws. Just as there is a copyright on all my websites. This is not only to protect the information I gather but also the information you submit. But be a good genealogist and do NOT give ALL your information out until you know who you are dealing with and what their intentions are...And if you are a professional genealogists wouldn't it be ethical to inform the person what your intents are to use their information? You will notice (below) I have started a few more mailing lists. I hope if the surnames are in your family lines the lists will be of help to you. Thank you for being a great group to work with!!! I am sending this on to all my lists as I feel this is an important message. It is also important to your research. I myself have 4 counties and 5 mailing list (and have applied for another one) that Rootsweb donates space and availability. I have unlimited webspace for each county. They do not give "commercials" each time you visit a site that is sponsored by Rootsweb. I do not send you the email I recieve from Brian and Karen when something has gone wrong with the equipment and explaining why there may be problems. But there are many times that no sleep is gotten due to working on the equipment to keep the sites going during peak times. I would not be sending this to you if I did not support Rootsweb myself. It is easier for me to make a donation in the month of Jan. - has a lot to do with memory but not old age creeping in <gr>. But I do realize with the holidays everyone might be a little strapped for money but if you could see anyway during the month of Jan. to even send $10 or $12 every little bit helps. I remember spending $10 easily just in stamps in one month much less a year and not getting half as much information as I do from the websites that Rootsweb sponsors. Thanks and hope the following helps you understand why I felt this was important. Kathy Everyone on a very limited income, those new and young genealogy researchers with young families or people who already give to RootsWeb may delete this message. For everyone else, I am begging you to listen. RootsWeb is run by a Mom and Pop operation called Brian Leverich and Karen Isaacson, husband and wife. They started RootsWeb out of the money in their pockets with the server in their home. Karen works for Rand Corp fulltime and Brian, a Phd in computers, does speaking engagements and keeps RootsWeb servers, equipment "pieced" together with whatever donations comes their way. Brian is determined to keep genealogy free on the internet. Our donations haven't been enough (about 2.5% of the users of RootsWeb sites donate) so he went out after a sponsor who wouldn't have strings attached. Palladium came across but was recently bought by the biggies, I think it was the Broderbund conglommerate - forget) and the money and equipment expected from Palladium didn't make the last payment. Soooo, Brian and Karen took out a $25,000 loan recently to keep our genealogy free out here. A thought has crossed some minds that the "biggies" are trying to break Brian and Karen down in order to get B and K to sell out to them. Brian and Karen are working to go non profit so down the road maybe some major contributions and foundation money will go their way. Brian says all involved in going non profit with an atty, etc, is mind boggling. In the meantime, RootsWeb is hurting in the financial support department. Anytime you are subscribed to a list or browse/search sites for genealogy information, note the domain in the url. Does it have rootsweb in the address? I am begging you, if you can afford it, to support the RootsWeb Genealogical Cooperative. If I have helped you in anyway with your research, would you please donate $12 or $24 to RootsWeb so we can keep all this great genealogy data on the internet free and even increase the data for users? I am doing my part by being a donor. Here is the site to learn about RootsWeb and the address to donate. http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html I know with Christmas we are all pretty well tapped out, but could you find $12 or $24 or even more by Jan? Think of those little pieces of paper with ancestors names on them that Grandpa, Grandma, Dad or Mom saved for you, how they would be flabbergasted at the time it is taking you to find a ggggrandparent by way of the internet and RootsWeb. By January, we will probably find the RootsWeb servers overloaded with all the new computers received as Christmas presents. It happens every year. A side note here - this is the best time to browse while everyone is in Wally World going crazy with shopping. Better get the browsing done now because January and the increase in people going online, it inevitably slows down. Thanks for listening and thank you to anyone who will contribute to RootsWeb. I had asked "Can someone tell me what a "white smith" was?" This is the responses I have gotten: 'Whitesmith one who finishes and polishes; tinsmith" 'A "whitesmith" was and is a metal smith who works in tin (white metal). This is an older term usally replaced by "tin smith." The word is from a distinction between black metal (iron) and white metal (tin) workers.' I thought maybe it had something to do with working with silver but did not know if that was correct or not. I sure appreciate the help and knowledge!! Kathy
While working the 1850 census I came across an occupation I have never heard of...I looked in all my "what did they mean" but did not find it. Can someone tell me what a "white smith" was? Even listowners who has done genealogy over 15 years still learns <gr> Thank you Kathy
