The 1920 Newton County AR census lists John L. Hensley, age 53, married to Laura (nee Faught) Hensley, age 24. Does anyone know anything about this family? John L. Hensley was born in Clay County, KY in 1861, and m. 1 Sarah Laura Nantz. He moved to northwest Arkansas where his son, Taylor Marcum Hensley, was born in 1896 in Deer, Mountain View, Boone County AR. John L. Hensley is my greatgrandfather. I find him on the 1880 KY Census and the 1920 Newton Co AR Census--but never find him anywhere during the 40 years interim. Any help appreciated. Also, John and his wife Laura are buried at the Deer Cemetery with their infant son Herald Hensley. Next to them is LaDonna Baucom Hensley, born 2/26/1948 and died 9/28/1971. Does anyone know anything about LaDonna Baucom, and which Hensley she was married to? Thanks for any help. Peggy
Help needed! Joseph Berry LOOPER (born 1813) moved from Overton Co, TN, between 1850 and 1860. He is listed in the Overton Co, TN, census in 1850: LOOPER, Jobury, 37, TN; Elizabeth, 39, f, TN; Manerva, 16, f, TN; Rachel, 14, f, TN; William, 9, TN; Jackson, 5, TN; Malinda, 5, TN; Solomon 1/12, TN. He is then in Newton Co, AR, in 1860, household #256: LOOPER, Joseph B., 47, TN; Sally, 46, TN; Malinda, 15, TN; Jackson, 15, TN. I am hoping to discover the marriages of daughters, Manerva (1834) and Rachel (1836). A search of the 1860 census reveals a possibility in household #266: BINUM, Pleasant, 24, TN; *Rachel*, 23, TN; James, 8, AR; Nancy J., 7, AR; M. E. (f), 3, AR. Can anyone identify the above Rachel, wife of Pleasant Binum? It will help my search, also, to know that she is not a Looper. Thanks!! Vonnie
I want to thank each and everyone of you for all the helpful information on my Amanda and William Matney, everyone has been wonderful. Thanks Carrie
AOL is not the only ISP that is affected by this problem but right now it is going thru the system and I feel you should be made aware. Last week I was sent an instant message from someone I did not know. Asked me a few questions and I refused to give a direct answer. I told them I was not who they thought I was and they asked me why another screen name I do not remember had me on their buddy list. Told them I had no idea. They asked if I was in Canada which I am not but told them again I was not who they thought I was. They began telling me how they had hacked in to this screen name and was using their service and wanted to know my name and where I was located. At this point I did click the Notify AOL on the instant message. I do not know what if anything happened to them. BUT I got an email from a contact this evening and I am going to give you a bit of their email: "I am going crazy. someone stole my password and sent porn stuff to thousands of people. I have email after email telling me off. I had to call aol and report it. I have changed my password 3 times today. AOL sent me a email with a virus scanner in it so i put it thru my system. I dont know how these people hackin and get your password. I am so upset. I have even had to disable my buddy list where I show up on you. People were instant messaging me and jumping on me. I have such a headach. Have you had any problem like this. I hope AOL has it straightened out. They said they had secured me, but I am so scared of seeing these emails again. Let me know if you have had any problem. AOL talked like it was going around. They were extra busy today. they said the system had something wrong, but did not tell me what." Now my point is this is an innocent victim and I hate to hear they are going thru all this because of someone elses actions. So think twice before you keep the war going. And above all else NOTIFY AOL (or your ISP) if something doesn't seem quite right. I don't usually do things like this but I think you should be aware and quite frankly I think it should be the ISP's place to notify all their members so they can help get things like this stopped. And I don't want you to have the same thing happen to you. Thank you Kathy
Hi I just joined the list today and was wondering if there are any cemetery books available for the McCutcheon cemetery in Mt Judea. I am looking for Amanda (Scarbrough) Matney and her husband William Matney. Amanda died 1888 and William died after 1880. I would like to correspond with their descendents. Thank you Carrie Scarbrough

It's excellent reading (historical novel) from junior high up about the heroics of Capt. John Cecil, also one of the first sheriffs of Newton Co., AR. He was a Confederate Robin Hood of sorts for the war-torn hill people and ravaged countryside. They constantly lived in fear of renegade "bushwhackers" and Yankee soldiers alike. Many true tales of brother against brother help us appreciate that historical time and the pioneers of today's luxurious life. Most of the real family names used were Harp, Villines and Cecil. As far as I know it's only available from the Newton Co. Historical Soc. in Jasper. It's a paperback for $10. Their address is on the Newton Co. Web page under www.usgenweb.com. Excellent reading! I am posting this to warn others about problems with ; Census Microfilm Expeditors 476 E. South Temple , Suite 4 Salt Lake City , UT 84111 website ; www.censusmicrofilm.com e-mail ; gme@nwinfo.net I was lured to order several microfilm copies from this company with "guarantees" of "speedy delivery" and "low price" . My order was placed in October of 1998 and as of this posting I have not received the order or a refund after numerous contacts with Steven Jensen at this firm . In his occasional replies he repeatedly gave false information to me as to the status of the order and cashed the check when mentioned stopping payment on it .I have copies of all documents and correspondences for those interested . Complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau and the United States Postal Inspectors , they have informed me that even they can't order this company to give a refund , but may seek criminal charges . I guess small claims court is next . If you are seeking genealogy resources......consider my experiences with this "Firm". Thank you , Kenneth Sartin
I am looking for parents or siblings of my great grandfather Robert Emmit Perryman, an orphan born circa 1865. We know that he was in Van Buren Township, Newton County, Arkansas in 1887 as R.E. Parreyman per the tax rolls of that county. We know that he married Eliza Jane or L.J. Cross in Newton County Arkansas on February 3, 1890 and was listed as being 25 years of age. We know that he and his family were in the 1900 Dodd City Township, Marion County,Arkansas census and was listed as being born in March 1866 in Missouri. We know that he and his family were in the 1910 Richland Township, Searcy County, Arkansas census and was listed as a 51 year old born in Arkansas. Does anyone have any information about Perrymans in Marion County or Newton County Arkansas in the mid 1860's or 1870's that might have had a young son who was left as an orphan? Any input would be appreciated.

To answer a few of the questions that has been asked: John had contacted me and mentioned he would like to have a Newton Co homepage and wanted to know where he might locate one. What made my decision to offer him USGenWeb Project Newton Co. was that he lived much closer to Jasper and would be able to better serve the county. This has been a great county for me - I have had great support and help to make Newton Co what it is. <Carroll Co., AR next door needs the same attention. Wish I had the time.> I did not realize that Carroll Co was up for adoption. Maintaining a county does not take a lot of time - you just have to set aside a little time a month. Most coordinators update once a month. There are many help lines that are there to help you with html's. When I first started with the counties I knew how to turn on the computer and scared to death to turn it off for fear I would lose something. And if I can learn anyone else will be a breeze at it. And John downloaded a program How to Learn HTML's in 24 hours. And the work I have seen that he has done - he has learned very well in such a short time. So when anyone sees a county in need of being online - couldn't we take a couple of hours we spend watching tv during the month and put it to good use?! < When is that fair in Leslie I would like to attend...> The North Ar Ancestor Fair is June 3-5 in Leslie, Ar. Thurs at the Marshall restaurant Susan Young will give a lecture on cemetery history and folklore in the Qzarks. The Wendell & Elizabeth Norton will tell the proper way to care for, restore and clean tombstones and cemeteries as well as the bad ways. Lawyer winston Chandler will describe his success in Ar courts establishing cemetery rights and enforcing cemetery obligations. Thurs night there will be a dinner and the a program by Roger Logan abt the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Fri at the Leslie school Tom Dillard's topic will be Mountain Images: Photography in the Ozarks; how to "read" pictures, incl how to date them; research tools for the Ozarks: Mountain Memories: Published Ozarks Memoirs & Ozark Newspapers: Their History and Availability. Also there will be Genealogy On The Internet by Dorothy Ragland & Bill Couch for beginners and Intermediate. That evening will be the mixer Dinner Sat. Dorothy Tincup Mauldin will give a lecture on Researching the 5 Civilized Tribes and the newer tribal organizations and their goals. Sat is also the big share fair day. There will be rows of people that have tables set up with their own genalogical work to share with other researchers. (usually a copy machine will be there for anyone to make copies) Also vendors will be there. I do know that Shawnee Color Lab will be there if you need photo restoration done be sure to bring the photos. And many of the counties will be there with their published books. I do know that Newton Co was there last year. To find out the fees etc for the events I have mentioned - contact: James J Johnson 2333 N East Oaks Dr Fayetteville, Ar 72703 or 501.442.3691or email johnston@ipa.net or Vickie Phillips Pruetzel 251 Church St Marshall At 72650 or 870.448.5983 For those of you who do not know - many listings for state seminars can be found on Michael Matthew website http://familyhistory.flash.net/ (go to What's Happening - USA events) I also list where Genealogy Shoppe will be on my website - see below - which I need to desparately update. Also I am one of the host for Oklahoma's Cowboys & Indians Ancestor seminar if any one should be interested in it see the URL below. I want to thank everyone for their hard work on submitting information and the great lookup work for the Newton Co website on the USGenWeb Project!! And I also want to tell each of you that you have been a great mailing list. But I am giving the County website and the mailing list to John Kent jkent@oztech.com He lives a little closer to Newton Co than I do and I feel he will be able to serve the county site much better than I at this time. I will be working closely with John on the county until he feels comfortable as he is just learning html's but has done a terrific job at learning so quickly. John will continue to work with those that have been working so hard to get the census records done to post on the website. I will remain on the list and visit Newton Co very often as I still have interests there. I have told John should he decide to give the county up I would take it back over. Hopefully I will get to meet some of you at the North Ar Genealogical Fair in Leslie, Ar. Keep up the good work and excellent support you have given me and more importantly good luck in your search!!
