This note does underline the importance of running virus software on your machines. ---- Yesterday, we became aware of a particularly nasty new virus called CIH or Chernobyl virus. Much like the old Michelangelo virus, this is a date dependent virus that lurks in machines until a particular date. This virus activates based upon the 26th of a month. Certain strains kick in on April 26th with others on June 26th. Since yesterday, we have found a fair amount of it on campus. The CERT Incident Note IN-99-03 can be viewed at http://www.cert.org/incident_notes/IN-99-03.html . I don't normally throw up red flags on these things, but I have some level of concern over this particular event. Two simple ways of dealing with this virus are to set your system date to April 27th now and then correct it on Tuesday. This does not get rid of the virus, but at least you avoid the date. The other simple method is to leave systems shut down between 11:59 pm on Sunday through 12:01 am on Tuesday. With both of these methods, systems must still be check for the virus. The best way of dealing with this is to find a program that recognizes and cleans it off prior to the 26th. --part1_b1b1731a.2455c812_boundary--

    2. This is something that could eventually effect our own state in which we live. So please give the state of Tx your support! Thank you Kathy <<Hello everyone! I am forwarding this e-mail from Jack Brissee, Chair, FGS/NGS Records Preservation Committee. We need to send letters ASAP! I know as genealogists we can and will make a difference! Please forward this information to everyone who can offer support and inform all genealogists. This is something that can happen with any state. We must stay aware of the bills being passed in our legislature! Thank all of you for your help in this matter of great concern. Paula Parke, Texas State Genealogical Society, District Representative for Collin, Dallas, Ellis, Fannin, Grayson, Hunt, Kaufman, Rockwall Counties Tue, 20 Apr 1999 21:05:40 -0500 To: ccraska@aol.com, shirleyrs@aol.com, lansup@ix.netcom.com From: Jack Brissee <jbrissee@execpc.com> Subject: HB 386 - Birth and Death Indexes This message is from the RECORDS PRESERVATION AND ACCESS COMMITTEE of the FGS and NGS By now you have probably heard something about Texas House Bill 386, an act relating to access under the public information law to birth and death indexes. This bill, if passed into law, would close birth and death indexes for 50 and 25 years, respectively, following the event. The attachment to this message provides detailed information. Mic Barnette alerted me to this situation. He has taken action to pass the word and to encourage Texans to write the Chair of the Texas Senate Committee on State Affairs in an attempt to have the bill changed or defeated. I am contacting you to encourage the involvement of the Texas State Genealogical Society and the Dallas Genealogical Society in this effort. We would specifically urge that your members write Sen. Florence Shapiro, Chair of the State Affairs Committee, members of the committee, and the state senators for their districts to ask that there be a full hearing at which genealogists have the opportunity to testify before any further action is taken on HB 386. Letters, messages and phone calls should be civil, rational, and should ask for sensible action such as early notification of hearings and the opportunity to testify. Thank you for your cooperation. 19 April 1999 The Honorable Florence Shapiro Chair, Senate Committee on State Affairs P.O. Box 12068 Capitol Station Austin, TX 78711 Dear Senator Shapiro: I am writing on behalf of genealogists in Texas and nationwide with respect to House Bill 836, an act relating to access under the public information law to birth and death indexes. HB 836 has been referred to the Senate Committee on State Affairs, but as far as I can determine, has not yet been scheduled for public hearing or committee action. I urge you to ensure that a full public hearing on this bill is conducted, one for which genealogists are given adequate notice and at which they have full opportunity to testify. The bill was introduced with the purpose of clarifying the right of public access to indexes of birth and death records. The records themselves are closed for 50 and 25 years, respectively (Sec. 552.115, Government Code), but the Code makes no mention of indexes. HB 836, as introduced stated that birth or death indexes are "public information and available to the public." The House Committee on Public Health adopted an amendment to the bill which would make the indexes "available to the public upon the anniversary of the date on which the record becomes public..." (emphasis added) thus completely reversing the purpose of the bill as introduced. This totally contrary version of HB 836 is the way in which it passed the House and has been referred to your committee. I am unable to find any record of the basis for this remarkable change, and genealogists learning of it have been, to say the least, shocked. The change to the purpose of HB 836 is quite incomprehensible and is certainly contrary to the basic thrust of Chapter 552, Public Information, of the Government Code, which proclaims the principle that public records should be open to the public unless there is very good reason to close them, and which places the burden of proof on those who would seek closure. The indexes involved provide but limited personal information (name, county and date of birth or death, and the file number of the birth or death record) thus posing no threat to privacy. The limited information is, however, important to genealogists and others who have legitimate reasons to know the dates and general locations of the birth and death of persons in their family lines. I am therefor appealing to you and your committee to ensure that the right of genealogists and other members of the public to access to these indexes is protected. With sincere appreciation for your consideration. Respectfully, John A. Brissee Chair, Joint Committee on Records Preservation and Access, Federation of Genealogical Societies and the National Genealogical Society 529 Echo Valley Road, Brooklyn, WI 53521 Fax: 835-9750 E-mail: jbrissee@execpc.com>>

Also on page 137 is the bio for ANNA LEA MATNEY, the submitter was Vivian Schilling, I would like to know how to contact her also. 1. [ARNEWTON-L] Tax lists, Newton Co., 1866-1870
    2. John R. Porter
    3. I have located an ancestor, Dennis Darta CRAIN, on the delinquent tax list of 1871 in the circuit court records of Newton Co., AR. This indicated that he had moved to Boone Co. The tax lists for 1871-1874 were on the same film, but nothing earlier. Are tax lists for 1866-1870 available for Newton Co., and, if so, have they been microfilmed? Failing that, does someone have access to the records themselves. I am trying to pin down when D. D. Crain came to Newton Co. from Williamson Co., IL. I now know that he left for Boone Co. after the census taker came through in 1870 (5 Sep) and the filing of the delinquent tax report (10 Mar 1871). I can probably pin this down a bit more based on when they collected the taxes in Jasper in 1871 and suppose that it would have been about the same time in 1870. He was on the Williamson Co., IL census report for 1860 and served in a Civil War unit until spring of 1862. I don't know whether he moved to AR shortly after his second marriage in 1863 (sold land in IL 24 Aug 1863) or waited a few years. He married Mahala (WHITE) EOFF, widow of Isaac A. Eoff and Dennis' third wife, in 1870 in Boone Co., AR. Any suggestions or helps will be welcome. -- John R. Porter j.porter@usip.edu http://www.usip.edu/chemistry/faculty/porter.htm

This comes from a credible source - our main computer people. 2. This does NOT mean the lists are getting infected. 3. Before people get confused again, let me clarify their message. They sa= y the email message with the subject noted has an attached file. They say don't even open the message, just delete it. Opening the email message WILL NOT spread the virus. Opening the attached Word file WILL spread the virus. However, their advice to just delete the email message itself is sound advice, because some people will open the email, then be tempted to open the Word file just to see what happens (sort of like the apple in the Garden of Eden). They are saying, "don't tempt fate, delete the email message." Good advice. 4. You'll see that CNet has information on this. That implies this is not limited to IU's mail system (which is logical). -------- -----Original Message----- From: IU Information Technology Security Office Sent: Saturday, March 27, 1999 1:26 AM Subject: E-mail virus/worm spreading rapidly at IU If you receive an e-mail message with the subject: "Important Message From ..." Do NOT open it, and DELETE it immediately. The message contains a Microsoft Word file attachment, which contains a dangerous macro "worm" (similar to a virus). If you open this file, the macro will send multiple copies of the file and worm to many other users, hence causing it to spread extremely rapidly. It will also infect your machine with a version of itself that will be present in any new Microsoft Word documents you create. This is not a hoax. The Indiana University IT Security Office and UITS have determined that the Microsoft Word macro "worm" is loose on the IU-Bloomington and IUPUI campus. This worm is also infecting other sites around the world. See the last section of this message for further technical details. WHAT WE'RE DOING We have reconfigured the main IUB and IUPUI mail relay systems to attempt to detect possible copies of the macro, and to return the message to the sender rather than allowing it be delivered. Although this may be limiting some legitimate mail, it has arrested the propagation outside of the campus Microsoft Exchange systems, which many faculty and staff use as their primary e-mail service. We disabled the Microsoft Exchange system for a period early Friday evening in order to temporarily halt propagation of the worm, and to allow time for a solution to be found to the problem. The Microsoft Exchange system will be returning to service shortly, although it may be necessary to configure it to permit sending messages to only one recipient at a time. We hope to have access to a better solution sometime over the weekend. Symantec (the company responsible for Norton AntiVirus) is working on protection and "disinfectants" for this problem. Once this update is available, we will send out another message to all IU e-mail addresses notifying users of the steps they should take to "disinfect" a machine that has been affected. In the mean time, if you haven't already, you should download and install Norton AntiVirus as soon as possible. It is available from SoftServe, or from IUWare: (this applies only to IU people) FURTHER TECHNICAL DETAILS A worm replicates itself by trying to send multiple copies of itself to other recipients, who, in turn, execute the worm and do the same. This particular worm is in the form of a Microsoft Word macro. An unsuspecting user receives a message with an attached Word document that contains the macro. If the user opens the document and allows the macro to execute (either by having disabled this protection in MS Word, or by confirming on a dialog box), the macro will execute and propagate itself. This macro also modifies your default document template to cause all new documents that you write to contain the worm. If you later send someone one of these documents, the recipient could start the propagation again, using your document as the base. HOW TO FIND OUT MORE C/Net's news.com has a story on this virus/worm: http://www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,34334,00.html?st.ne.fd.gif.e Updates specific to the situation at Indiana University will be provided at the following location: http://www.indiana.edu/~itiu/ --part0_922679342_boundary--
