from "The Kittochtinny magazine : a tentative record of local history and genealogy west of the Susquehanna. v. 1, Jan.-Oct. 1905. (Chambersburg, Pa.) One chapter details the local companies formed after Braddocks Defeat (French and Indian War). On page 384 we have details of the 2nd voluntary company, formed under Captain Joseph ARMSTRONG. It was made up of his neighbors in the townships of Letterkenny, Hamilton, and St. Thomas, in Franklin Co, PA. Sixty-eight men, only 34 surnames. Five BARNETs and SHIELDS, four SCOTTs and Mitchells. Three EATON, IRWIN, McCAMMANT, McCAMISH, STUART and SWAN. Two ARMSTRONGs, BROWN, CALDWELL, DINNEY, DIXON, McCORD, NORRICE (Norris) and PATTERSON. Captain ARMSTRONG was almost equal in importance in the Conochocheague settlement with Colonel Benjamin Chambers himself. Two sons of Joseph ARMSTRONG, John and Thomas, removed to North Carolina following the war. Also on the roll are brothers James and William. The youngest Armstrong, Joseph, was too young. While Captain Joseph ARMSTRONG died in 1760, FOUR OF HIS SONS SERVED IN THE NORTH CAROLINA REVOLUTIONARY LINE.
