This is as far back as our Armstrongs go... Family legend has it that William Armstrong (b. ABT 1792 possibly Scotland, d. 1862 in E. Machias, Maine) worked on the property of an earl, fell in love with the earl's daughter, Margaret Langhorn (b. 12 Aug 1789 possibly England), but the relationship was forbidden by her father. They ran away and got married on March 3, 1814 at St. Mary's in Carlisle. According to their marriage certificate, at the time of their marriage, William was from St. Mary's parish in Carlisle and Margaret was from Gretna in North Britain (Scotland). They had a child, Francis C. Armstrong, on February 9, 1813 and then another son, Robert W. Armstrong, on August 12, 1815. They came to the United States in 1819 (they are on the 1820 census) via The Kitty which shipwrecked off the Maine coast on Cross Island. They settled in Machias, Maine and continued to grow their family. Would anyone out there have information on either the Langhorn or Armstrong family? We are stuck and cannot locate either sets of parents or William/Margaret's siblings (if any). Thanks for any help you can lend. Patty
