Sometime late the family settled in Kelly Township, Warren County, IL. This the story of the first Armstrong who went from Scotland to Ireland; (copied from a letter from Stella Kellogg Wright to Aileen Terpening August 27, 1952. I think he is the father of my grandfather which would be William who married Jane Montgomery avoe. "Anyway, he must have been a good man as he was just on a business trip but took time to go to church and there he saw a girl who took his fancy and he said he would not go back to SCotland until he met her. After a most arduous courtship he convinced her that he was her one and only heart throb, so he came back and they were married. The family lived at Enniskillen, County Fermanag, Paris of Derryvolland, Barony of Tyrkennedy, Province of Ulster, Ireland. Their home was called "Isleview"; because they could see so many Islands in a neaby lakes. The origin of the name Armstrong was also in Stella's letter: "Long ago a Scotich king had a retainer by the name of Graeme, who was a tall man an very strong. One day while riding with his retainer, the king fell from his horse and Graeme picked him up in his arms and lifted him onto his saddle. Therefore, the King changed his name to ARstreon because of the great strenth in his arms. The King also gave him a cost-of-arms. Georgia Grice, Hugh Armstrong's sister, showed me her b eautiful china, which was decorated with this coat=of=Arms. She also told me that her brother, William has well as other relatives had this ccoat-of-Arms on their carriage doors. William Armstrong married Jane Montgomery. They were the Parents of 18 children, two of whom emigrated to America. The origin of the name, Armstrong, was told to Estella Kellogg Wright thus: copied from a letter Estella wrote to Miss Aileen Terpening, dated August 27, 1952. "Long ago a Scottish king had a retainer by the name of Graeme, who was a tasll man and very strong. One day, while riding with his retainer, the king fell from his horse and Graeme picked him up in his strong arms and lifted him onto his horse. Therefore, the king changed his name to "Armstrong" because of the great strength in his arms. The king also gave him a Coat-of-Arms. Georgia Grice, Hugh Armstrong's sister, showed me her beautiful china, which was decorated with this Coat of Arms. She also told me that her brother, William, as well as other relatives had this Coat-of-Arms on their carriage doors." JOHN ARMSTRONG married Frances Moore about 1830.
