Dear, dear Robin, Stillbirth happens to women with diabetes, diagnosed, or undiagnosed, as well as to those who smoke. Green potatoes do not cause such harm. That's another of those old wives ENGLISH tales.... (now I'm running for the hills.) Seriously, think of Jackie O (if you are old enough to remember her) She had a stillbirth just before I had my second one, and there she was, putting a cigarette in her mouth. Now obstetricians say don't smoke, before or after or at all. Just cut off the green if you see on a potato, and eat it raw. Pass the salt. Mary Mary
Wow, you can find out a lot about almost anything if you Google for it. When potatoes are exposed to light, chlorophyll forms, as with most plants, and turns them green. Usually the green doesn't extend far past the skin. In addition to the green color potatoes also develop solanine which can be poisonous if one eats an awful lot of green potatoes; however, if one is allergic to solanine it can make them very sick. (This is pretty uncommon.) In other words you might have to eat 10 pounds of green potatoes to get really sick. A strong allergic reaction could possibly result in a miscarriage or early labor, I suppose...why not, stranger things have happened. But for most people just peeling off the green part before cooking takes care of the problem. Markets usually remove potatoes that are green or turning green as people won't buy them. Lots of info about this if you go to www.google.com and put "green potatoes" in the searchbox. "Stillbirth happens to women with diabetes, diagnosed, or undiagnosed, as well as to those who smoke." Mary, Mary, Mary, don't tell me you're one of THOSE?!?!? lol I have yet to meet a doctor who doesn't blame every single "itty bitty thing" I might complain of on my diabetes. Give me a break, diabetes does NOT cause have the things I've had over the years!!!!!!!!! I swear I could do a better job of doctoring diabetics than any who've treated me!! ;D As for smoking, I asked my general practitioner about that when I was pregnant with Jade. He said "Well, you're a diabetic, so you're bound to have big babies. But you smoke, which means the baby will be fairly small. That should work out about even!!" ROTFLMBO LOVED that doctor!! ;D For the record, despite my diabetes ALL my babies were fairly small so I guess Dr. White was right! lol Jade and Casey were about 6.5lbs each and Lauren and Robert were 5.5lbs each. Jade now weighs 220lbs and is 1/2" shorter than me, so don't ANYONE tell me smoking stunts your growth!! lol "Green potatoes do not cause such harm. That's another of those old wives ENGLISH tales.... (now I'm running for the hills.)" Come to run with me have you Mary? The race is on!! lol Now I did some research on this back in Germany because they ONLY had green potatoes at the CX and it really peed me off! :( The quickest information I can find today is that potatoes turn green because of solanine which IS toxic, if eaten in large amounts. The site I just found also said you can just cut the green off, but I've read differently on two other sites when we were in Germany, both American sites from memory. Anyway, according to the Mayo Clinic, they're "probably okay to eat". Don't you love their decisiveness on this one, from of all places the Mayo Clinic?!? ;D I play it safe anyway; if it's green I simply don't buy it anymore. Take care, Rob.
Lots and lots about green potatoes if you go to www.google.com and put "green potatoes" in the search box. More info than you ever wanted to know.
