What I meant was...it's an organization that is not open to every interested woman. As I said, I know that the D.A.R. sponsors educational and patriotic projects which is admirable. Your wife belongs; I am eligible to belong; however, some of my friends who might like to be members can't belong. They are exluded. That's what I meant by "exclusive." Dear Marilyn, Now you've got me interested. Can you tell me what caused them to be excluded? The DAR organizations around here seem to be anxious to have new members. Here's a (kinda) funny story. True, and only (kinda) funny. Yes, the D.A.R. does sponsor projects. In my senior year of high school,(Early 1980's), I was chosen through the school system, to represent my state with a chorus that was to tour Europe that summer. The expense was more than my family could bear, so I sought donations. All of the "Men's clubs" such as the "Owls", "Moose", "Rod and Gun clubs", along the veterans clubs were contributing and it was greatly appreciated. After giving only a brief speech, many generosely gave me anywhere from $25.-$400. One organization I contacted was the local D.A.R. and was told they would consider sponsoring me, but I must come to their meeting. I do not come from a wealthy family. After taking my last bit of money and putting it in my gas tank, I began the journey, instructions in hand, on how to get to the D.A.R meeting I was supposed to attend in order to see if would be sponsored. It was the furtherest, by far that I'd gone for a donation. I'd say it was at least 20-30 miles of long, winding back roads, a nearly empty gas tank by then, and finally I was there. I entered a room with approx. 15-20 ladies, and gave my speech that I had given to all the other organizations. No other group had asked me to sing for them. The ladies were kind and welcoming, and asked me if I would please sing a song for them (accapella and unrehearsed), and of course, I obliged. They applauded and asked me to sing yet another one, which I did. After my performance, I was told that they would sponsor my trip. They handed me a pre-sealed envelope and wished me luck on my tour of Europe. I was happy that I was able to get more financial help, even if it had used up gas money I didn't have to get there, and even though the place had been so hard to find. By now, it was getting dark, yet I was smiling all the way to my car and as started my car up in the cold winter air to warm it, I opened the envelope. I couldn't believe what I saw.... Enclosed was a check for $5.00 ! It had cost me at least that much in gas to get there!
