Our Scotch-Irish ancestors drank rum, and plenty of it, in New England anyway, as soon as it became available and they could stop making poteen from potatoes. Rum was easy to get as ships filled empty cargo holds on their return trip from the Caribbean, and later they even made it in Boston. People drank it all day to keep warm in the winter, or feeling better at other times...men, women, and even (watered down) older children...and most had great tolerance. Although they drank a lot of rum, it didn't make (most of ) them intoxicated as they were so used to consuming it. (OK, I'm not talking the Puritans here...most of the S-I were Presbyterians.) So...to keep a tradition alive (and because I prefer rum in eggnog), I vote for rum...and not the white kind, get the golden kind. Where's the party, and how come we're not invited? Hey Marilyn How's the wx up there in NH?? Wx man on Tv last night said you guys up there in NE were just about to catch one hell of a blizzard... We finally got a pretty good snow yesterday, trouble is, the day before we got freezing rain on the roads, now it's covered with snow and there are multiple fender benders this morning out there - according to the radio... Ain't no party... the other day I bought a jug of egg nog... only had a bottle of Canadian Whisky to mix with it... the other 3 adults each thought something else should be mixed with egg nog.. actually my son agreed with me, (it don't make any difference) but the wife thought it should be brandy, and the d-i-l was in favor of rum... I just thought I'd ask the list to see how varied the opinions would be.. I signed up with the Airedale rescue group for an Airedale if one should come up any time soon... they are very good watch (guard) dogs.. and they can make good hunting dogs.. But if an Airedale (first choice) doesn't come up soon, I may get a Cairn Terrier (Scotty) as a guy has one pup out of a litter left.. I don't like his asking price, but if the pup is still avail when we get back from Oregon I may just go and get it.. a good friend of mine had one when we were young boys... named him McGee... The dog was very fiesty, and a barrel of laughs.. mele kalekee maka John D Marilyn Otterson wrote: > Our Scotch-Irish ancestors drank rum, and plenty of it, in New England > anyway, as soon as it became available and they could stop making poteen > from potatoes.
