    3. I'm reading The Steel Bonnets by Fraser, 1972. It is about the history and culture of the Border Reivers... without the rose colored glasses. It is almost 400 pages long and I've barely begun. One of the charts shows about 40 families like the Armstrongs and Elliots, and connects all those who were feuding with lines. It makes a very interesting point about those unsettled times. -----Original Message----- From: armstrong-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:armstrong-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Robert Armstrong Sent: Thursday, July 03, 2008 3:02 PM To: armstrong@rootsweb.com; nitasilverfox@yahoo.com Cc: BecklerPk@comcast.net Subject: [ARMSTRONG] 4th of July As the 4th of July peeks over the horizon, I would like to recommend a book you might want to read in your leasure time. It was written by David McCullough, and is quite compelling. This book, "John Adams" tells more about our country and its beginings than I ever knew. I have read several of Mr. McCullough's books, such as:     Truman, Morinings on Horseback, and The Johnstown Flood. Each of which you might find interesting. However, John Adams is the best so far. I discovered that both George Washington and John Adams died on the same day, w the 50th aniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.   ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ARMSTRONG-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. That's a fun book to read, or at least parts of it...especially those about those wild and wooly Armstrongs, the mighty Border reivers. Imagine all those men on horseback, wearing their steel helmets and chest plates...I guess we Armstrongs are pretty domesticated in comparison to those folks, and maybe just as well! Be sure to check out the curse uttered against the Armstrongs and all the other wild Border clans...I believe it's at the back of the book. If your garden isn't growing so well, blame that curse...
