I found this in my Drafts File. Can't recall if I actually sent it as it appears to be unfinished with a signature so I send it now so that I can clear my old files. Never had a reply from the old gentleman in Edinburgh that I mentioned, I know his wife was in severe ill health and perhaps that took all his time. **** "Looking for information on John Armstrong's ancestry, born about 1813 Scotland, Married Mary Lynn in Newcastle upon Tyne Nov 1840. Occupation 'Engine Driver' & lived in Quarry Fields, Gateshead (1861). John & Mary had (as far as I know), 6 sons; Frederick (Jun 1855), John (abt 1842), Joseph (abt 1858), Robert (abt 1853), Thomas (abt 1850) and William (abt 1847) - all of which were born in Gateshead, Durham. From John & Mary's marriage certificate I know his farther was called Thomas Armstrong and was a collier (1840)." ***** Dear ??? This site is now covered by the Davy-Roll steelworks. I know there are photographs of the rear of the houses which later was renamed Quarryfield Road. Typical workers homes they were. The pictures were kept by Gateshead Central Library on Prince Consort Road, Gateshead. Should you be interested you could write to them with a view to perhaps buying a copy. I learned this many years ago when I found my ancestress Margaret Pyle also living at Quarryfield Road. Sent your enquiry to an old friend (not knowing if he still lives) as his ancestor was also an Armstrong in Gateshead who was an engine driver, in fact he drove Queen Victoria on several occasions by request. Perhaps your ancestor knew him or was even related to him. Joe Armstrong. July 2008
